Exclamation 06 Dyna Inner primary bearing info: Please Read!

:haThe MoCo apparently has finally gotten their collective heads out of their ass, and have come up with a fix as opposed to a band-aid for the inner-primary bearing wear issue. Inner case replacement, stator replacement, shaft, bearing, etc. Should be gratis, but perhaps a slight deductible involved without extended warranty. ppybd:

UPDATE#####Totally FREE. Even waived the deductible.

I'll get a copy of my WO scanned in here ASAP, for those of you that need it to steer your dealer into doing the right thing.

Exclamation Inner primary bearing

2006 Dyna's were the guinea pig for the be 96" models. Unfortunatly, there has been a wide spread problem of the inner primary bearing failing. The initial response by Harley was that the bearing was to be replaced, at there expense, @ the 15k service, to be continued for the life of the bike as needed. Unfortunately, the bearing was failing much faster than that for a lot of owners. This was not a solution to the problem, but a band-aid, that could be a doorway to much more serious issue, (safety, anyone?).

I noticed that my primary was noisy for quite a while, but was told by the stealership it was normal on more than one occasion. Took them at their word, because they are the pro, right? Wrong.

Yesterday, very pronounced noise from the primary in neural. Went away when pulling in the clutch. First thing this morning, took it in to the service dept. , and got the same line of BS. Called the MOCO,
Explained my concerns, and was informed that the issue would be forwarded to the tech department for review. 2 hours later, primary's apart, and I'm informed that apparently the 06's had an "alignement" issue in the primary. Inner primary, stator, shaft, bearing, etc. are all to be replaced with the correct parts, (06b bearing, 08 inner primary case, stator, etc.)

Just posting this because for those of you with an 06 Dyna, it is NOT the bearing causing the problems. It is much more involved than that. In other words, get in while the gettin's good.

With my 2006 Dyna, I just recently noticed a primary noise at idle. If I pull the clutch in it dissapears. It sounds like the gears turning. I changed the fluid and looked for metal but all looked good. I don't remember hearing this earlier in the year. It just hit 10,000 miles. Is this an indication of the bearing failure?

I'm willing to bet it is.

Baker makes a replacement 1 piece bearing for this application. Lots of 06 Dyna guys are switching to it. They are also tack welding the bolts on the 2 piece stator. The bolts come loose and take out the stator. Some of the 06 dyna's have a different stator that is fully welded insted of bolted together.

I worked on a bike a couple weeks ago with the inner bearing race pushed in so far that it the back of it could not be seen. It was in the outer shaft so far the race puller wouldnt work.

Inner primary

After this situation became known, Harley supposedly sent notices to owners of 06 Dyna's that the problem existed, and @ their expense, it would be repaired at the 15k service, and as needed threrafter. I never received any notice about this. They are covering mine, is all I can say. As you can see from my sig. my bike is not stock.

This is a manufacturers defect, and should have nothing to do with whether you are in or out of warranty. If you have an 06 Dyna, this bearing will fail. More likely sooner than later, welding itself to the shaft, causing a real nightmare scenario.

All I can say is that I called the MoCo prior to contacting the dealer.

She was "unaware" of the issue, but put my call in the system, and issued me a ref. Number for the tech dept. The dealer, whohave always been difficult on warranty issues, seemed to change their tune when made aware that I was in the system with Harley at this point.

To the gentleman with the neutral noise: That is the only indication that I had that there was a problem. When I went IMO he shop to retrieve some stuff out of my chin bag, the like it had A file and chisel taken to it.

Now is the time to address this, because even he dealers who have been seeing this problem are unaware of the extensive reacement of parts that Harley has come up with to rectify the problem. Just sayin'. Good luck.

Ps. If someone needs q copy of my work order after I get mine back, to "motivate" their dealer and cut through the BS, let me know.

Shawn

Inner pRimary bearing.

5 day lead time to get the inner primary case. Most dealers do not stock it. Bike's just in the shop yesterday, so at least a week until I get it back. I'm a moving contractor, so it might be 2 weeks or so before I can post the work order, (heading for Il, Pa next week). I would call Harley customer service and get in the system. If you aren't experiencing any symptoms yet, the dealer probably won't play ball.

Cowboy Harley in Austin, Tx. is my dealer, and you might try having your service dept. commo with them for a little "enlightenment".
Concensus seems to be Harley has started turning a blind eye to these recurring bugs due to the lull in the economy. Gotta' be a squeaky wheel to get s&$t handled, I guess. Shawn

This happened on my '06 Dyna. They told me it was a heat treat issue with the bearing supplier. Fixed mine for free even though i had some self installed perf mods.
