Newbie advice on modified 2001 FXD dyna

After 40 odd years of British, mainly Japanese and the odd Italian machine, I have succumbed to the oft repeated mantra......"you've never had a Harley?"

Didn't want the full on easy rider experience and after various bits of advice I bought a modified 2001 FXD. Therein lies the thrill, what have I bought?? Fitted with a host of SE parts. 1550cc (95cu??) barrels, performance cylinder heads and HTCC forged pistons, 211 (I think) cams, 42mm flatside carb, 6200 race ignition module, high performance cylinder studs, adjustable pushrods and comp release buttons. SE II slip on mufflers (which won't get past my MOT guy) complete the package.

Its low mileage 13600 miles with all of the above fitted around the 10K mark, goes really well and the previous owner was up front with an oil consumption issue he put down to valve stem oil seals, plugs are oily but not excessively so and front pot is worse than rear .
Front brake is crap but a twin disc upgrade is on the way.

Is this a good mix of parts?? what should I be wary of (if anything). Any advice gratefully received.

Cheers

Welcome to the forum!

Sounds like a very nice set-up and with the proper balance of parts. 02 and earler TCs have the Timken bearing on the left side and that's a plus, as your bottom end is strong. HD switched on the 03s.

There are CNC HTTC heads and non-CNC HTTC heads. The CNC are more suited to larger builds and both styles need proper squish to run to their potential. Given that, they run well.

IIRC, guys running the SEIIs added a row or two of holes to the baffles to get better flow and that was said to help a lot. You could also switch to a 2:1.

I went with the dual disk set up on the front of mine and have no complaints. Never drove with the stock single disk set up so can't offer a comparison but I can stop pretty hard when needed and cannot imagine having less stopping power available.

A set of Works shocks on the rear and Race Tech emulators and a fork brace up front did wonders for the handling. Ditto Dunlop K591s in place of the stock tires. Lots of guys like Avon Venoms and Metzlers too.

You might look into changing your primary gearing from 3:15 to 3:37. You'll get a little more snap going through the gears and only add about 225 RPM or so to your top gear.

Congrats on what sounds like a really nice bike!

As far as brakes go, a floating disc, braided lines and lyndall pads will be quite an improvement over stock.

Thanks for the info and I apologise for the late delay in acknowledging, I couldn't remember where I had put this post. Lots of useful advice on here so I guess I will be a regular.
I was given the necessary parts for the 3:37 primary option that you mention including a complete SE clutch but to be honest this beast is as quick of the mark as I need it to be at present. Hence the need for the twin disc upgrade

I also can't imagine putting more holes into the SEll baffles, they already cause the ears of small children to spontaeneously bleed at start up. I have had to put the original silencers back on just to get my bike road legal and keep my neighbours happy (early morning starts)

In any event really enjoying the Harley experience, great bike, great people.

Cheers
