yep, they are bastards. i own one. best part is the front forks, stiffer chassis. but you can buy an 05 and earlier and fix it. i guess it depends on what you want and how you ride.

I like mine. Forks, chassis, 6 speed and 2.96 ratio, and when you put some power/tq up front they are a blast, highway and byway.

i like mine too OZ, best handling HD built except a sporty. but if you were to take a 02 for example and stiffen chassis and suspension, (the 06 still sucks on swingarm /frame integrity) then it may whoop us in the corners. so given cheaper and having more money to mod, the early dyna may be the better deal?????

the 06 is still better than 07-09. has better crank. and the 06 and up bikes have a serious primary and tranny. really is a great bike.

Dennis

This is like the big brother of my hotrod 66 XLCH Sporty LOL

As you surely know, swingarm issues can be addressed, ie. strengthened - lengthened, as well as motor to chassis integrity and a good fork brace can't hurt either.
As far as twisties, I have previously ran mine w/mid-controls as this is the tuck and scoot mode, but now am running only forward controls.
Even so, these units are a real blast if that's what you're looking for. BTW The mid pegs can be utilized even w/the forward controls for the best of both worlds! Done that too!

dynadream,
Pick the style of bike that fits you and your riding preferences, cruiser, touring, sport/hotrod,...
As you can tell, some of us love these 06 DYNA's. They are a great building platform especially if you get one low miles. Maybe better deal? They can run with q/detatch shield and/or bags to be even more versitile.

But, IMO they are still best as a 1 people bike. Hope this helps.

As said above, with the 06 being a model year of many changes, there were several failure issues. Here is a list of the prominent problems:
  • Inner Primary Bearing failure
  • Stator failure
  • Front end clunk
  • Fuel Injectors (service bulletin to change 8 degree injectors to 25 degree injectors)
  • Front motor mount/isolator alignment issues
  • Battery box bolt recall
  • False neutral tranny recall

More than just a few 06 Dynas have experience problems from the above list. That being said, I have one and love it. I have suffered the IPB failure, the front end clunk, and the false neutral recall. My local dealer took care of the IPB and false neutral recall at no charge. I fixed the front end clunk with a new steering head washer available from HD while I had the front end apart for other mods.

If the price is right, the 06 can be a good option, even if you experience any of the above. The FXD is very modifiable and makes for a great bike. If the bike you are considering doesn't strike you as a great deal, you may avoid some headaches, repair expense, and downtime going with earlier or later models.

Granted, some folks have had some of the failures in the list above but mine has nearly fourty five thousand miles and the only failure I've had is a crank position sensor which was covered under warranty. If you're getting a good price I'd say,go for it.

Good Luck

Tom

Got mine in Feb '06... already had the false neutral fix. Front-end clunk is now just an occasional tick... did the new washer/retorq thing, along with new bearings etc (got the '07-later triple tree after cracking mine... the TT is weak for 06, careful when you torque!).

Been in for the IPB... you'd hear a spinning bearing sound sometimes (sometimes not... when you lean the bike so the oil gets on it, the sound goes away). Battery bolt recall done. I insisted on getting the 25 degree injector thing done (free SE injectors!)... it *did* help the lumpy low-speed a little; now with Stage 1 no problem. Got IPB done one week before the 2yr factory warranty expired... lucky!

I love my Dyna... it's like an under-bored Sportster, like the 883 was... you know it'll last longer because the bottom end is designed for 96cubes. The crank specs are better for '06 than later... they were having too much trouble making them, so they just loosened the tolerance x2. Most of the new engine stuff fits... you look at catalogs, they say '07-up, '06-up Dyna.

Face it... we got one of the good ones.

how many miles on the bike. just took my Dyna Super Glide in for
the transmission repair and the 10K service. seems like a common problem on 2006 Dynas ( type 2006 dyna transmission repair into Google to see 35K hits on this problem ). mine is still under warranty for the next 4 years ( bought the 7 year extended warranty when I bought the bike ) and was covered by the warranty , but would have cost about $335 to fix if it wasn't under warranty. no other real problems with the bike at all in nearly 10K miles. the transmission problem was mentioned in a Harley service bulletin that was issued and then canceled , you can read all about it in Google and probably on this Forum as well.

That would be a great bike to go to an all bore 107. with a light rider and the right build, that bike could kick ass. There are a lot of good things here also. The hydraulic cam chain tensioners, the better flowing heads(they could still use porting, especially for power above 5500), the 6sp trans(I do not know what the gearing is here, but that might have to be addressed). The TB with better injectors is better - it goes on and on. enjoy the bike, but have it lookes at.

'06 Dynas : 2.96 gearing, but a 30t primary really makes 'em rock, especially solo riding.

Still love mine. . Although

Paul,

Stop..........teasing...........me...........now!

107 all bore, no wait,......117 lighter wheels,.....no,..wait ...again...124, max effort....

no, wait...................Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh. Can't...control...myself...
