Ozbernie wants to know Dino or Syn?
Best FXDX model

Greetings all,
I am seeking valued advice on what would be considered the best year model of the FXDX models 99-05. I am planing to buy an FXDX later this year and want to know which would be the best year model to search for. Thanks.
Bernie.

Cheers Claydbal,
Please pardon my ignorance.
Do you mean fuel injection? I'm new to twin cams, so are you referring to bearings when you say timken?
Thanks for the advice mate.

He is refering to the Timken crankshaft bearings, after 02 they went to an inferior bearing design, the pre-02 models can handle more power, etc.

No 02 Dyna had fuel injection...not available until 04 IIRC.

99 FXDX here

I got a 99 and have been nothing but thrilled with it! I know everyone seems to want to lower their FXDX's, but I for one love the handling of this bike in the twisties just as it is.

I just bought an 01' and really like it. Rides amazingly smooth for an HD.

I just had some Metz's installed. What a difference

I do want to ditch the lowering blocks the original owner had installed and get some 11" black 412's. I'm also planning on a solo seat with some nice leather bags.

There's a guy here in Phx that has an 99' on CL for $6500.

After alot of reading I had also come to the conclusion the 02 motor was best for the newer motors , but would also seriously consider last year of evo as well. The only thing that erks me about my 02 is the chain driven cam guide issue.
Here's some interesting reading http://www.v-twinforum.com/forums/to...uld-i-buy.html

chain driven cam is not an issue. Just go to gear drive when you put in the Andrews 37g. Works great in my 2002 fxdx-t.

I gotta agree with claydbal, '02 is my favorite. I had an '02 and have an '04 now. (I had an '06 FXD35 in between)

The brakes improved in '00 to four piston calipers, somewhere around then they also switched to the 150 tire and narrower belt I think.

'02 had possibly the best motor. Mine always ran strong from well below freezing into the 100's. I also liked the black paint and black exhaust my '02 had.

The '04 is good. My only real complaint about the '04 is they must have switched ignitions (maybe it has something to do with the cam position sensor) because you're supposed to wait about 4 sec while the ignition does some self check before you fire it up. 4 sec doesn't sound long, but when your buddy's already riding away it feals long. Besides at an average of 10 seconds a day you waste looking at the stupid engine light waiting for it to go out, you waste about an hour a year.

Does anyone know why Progressive 412's will not fit 01-05 FXDX's.

I talked with Progressive and they would not confirm that they wouldn't fit, they just said they would not be under warranty if you installed them.

I'm thinking the reason they said they won't fit is because they're not a sport shock like the Showa's that came with the bike.

I'm not into canyon carving and would like to install a set of black 412's and get rid of my lowering blocks. Plus one of my Showa's is leaking. Also, this way I can fit some saddle bags properly.

Thanks...

1/4 Fairing...

It's an HD product. I looked at others but went with the HD one. It's really a lot smaller than it looks in pics. I got a quick detachable windscreen which gives more/better coverage on long trips, but I like the looks of the 1/4 fairing for tooling around. It does seem to streamline the headlight and gauges a bit, and if you lean foward and get behind it, it really seem to do the job in the twisties... then again I'm used to riding old Norton cafe racers.

I got it at my local dealer (American HD in Leominster MA), they always give me at least 10% off whatever Latus/HD suggested retail so I keep giving them my business.... here it is from Latus.

http://www.latus-harley-davidson.com...ring-Kit-3.htm

Easy to install.
Good luck,
Capt Jim
