1000 mile service question

Hello all - just wondering if anyone knows what the dealer does on the 1000 mile check, my 08 Lowrider is due, I know what it says there suppose to do, but I have I have heard that they basically change the oil and tighten a few bolts. what does anyone know about this. It kind of sounded to me that it needed to be done at an HD dealer for warranty purposes. What the real story guys?

Thanks Mark

Not sure about everyone else, but I just had my 1000 mile service and they changed all fluids (oil, trans, and shock), ensured all fasterners were tight. They also adjusted the clutch, checked tire pressure, lubed all moving parts (cables, pegs, etc) and filled the tank, and washed the bugs off.

Now I did a prepaid maintenance plan ($1500) that takes care of all maintenance & services up to 60k

They might "push" that it has to be done by them, but that's not the case. I would keep receipts of the parts you buy (fluids, gaskets, etc.) to show it was done, but they CANNOT require that you have them do it. And I was a tech for 4 years (until recently).

To be honest, what is gonna get done is:
change fluids and filter
check plugs (can find problems this way, such as leaking valve guides, BIG problem in 2005)
check tires / spokes
check/adjust belt tension
adjust clutch (the first 1000 miles, you get the most cable stretch)
adjust throttle/idle cables (same thing, stretch).
USED to adjust primary chain, but new bikes have auto tensioner (ugh, they make 'em too tight IMHO)

We didn't lube the cables at 1k, because we did it at PDI. 1000 miles is too soon to do that again.

And I never saw ANY techs going over fasteners... with every bolt on a bike, you'd never get work out the door. Sorry, but that doesn't happen, at least not in any shop I was ever in. We might check axles & caliper bolts, but that's about it.

Of course, we had our hands on lots of places, so if you noticed something wasn't right, you fixed it. But just going around checking everything.... that would take an hour easy, just changing the "bit" (socket, torx, allen, etc) on your torque wrench, then resetting your torque wrench to the proper setting. Naw... that ain't happening.

Because what you DON'T wanna do, is just start cranking down on bolt without using a torque wrench. Why? Most bolts use loctite... if you wrench on a bolt, and turn it just a hair... you've just successfully broken that loctite patch. Which is what? Gonna let it turn and back out.

I know I'm gonna catch LOTS of heat from people saying, "What? You don't check the nuts and bolts? It SAYS to!". I'm telling you from personal experience... other than some MMI newbies doing it on PDIs the first few weeks, it doesn't happen, at least in the shops I've been in.

Buy a service manual, it details all the items that needs down for your initial service and thereafter. Even if you dont plan on doin it yourself, its still nice to have.

Faast Ed is an unknown quantity at this point
A busy shop is gonna put the newer less experienced guy on routine stuff like this.
Then he gets to go out and play on it! (test ride).

Not gonna happen on my bike.

Do It Yourself.

mnlowrider105,

What actually is done in the service dept for a scheduled maint at any one dealer is subject to guess at best. Each one is different.

No one can answer a general question like you asked.

Chopper Dude,
Had this discussion with a Harley Tech, and explained that tightening on a bolt with loctite on it compromises the integrity of the fastener. One agreed, he works on my bike when I do not. The service manager said the manual says check for tightness. We agreed to disagree.

I agree do it yourself ,NO you dont have to have the dealer do it for warranty issues ive never had a dealer ask for proof that ive done the maintenance when warranty issues come up,also one thing no one has mentioned the neck has no grease in it from the factory to fill it up takes allmost an entire tube the first time ,thereafter just a couple of pumps..Tom..

Had my 1k and 5k done at my local dealer. The 1k was fine. After the 5k the idle was too high and my rear muffler is blued from the front pipe exhaust fumes.

Shifts louder as well. Pings under acceleration and it ain't from lugging (not my first HD) When I brought it up to them they informed me that Harley did not recognise blueing as a warrantiable issue no matter where the blueing occurs.

Not real pleased as I have never dealt with mapping so I will have to try and find a local independent or dig out my service manual (actual HD for the '07) and figure it out myself
