09 SE Ultra breather question

Bought my 09 SE Ultra brand new and strange as it sounds, it did not have a high flow breather. I finally put a new SE high flow breather on today and when I started the bike it ran a bit rough and kicked the engine light on. I also realized that I had no throttle response at all......twist it and no change in engine idle speed. I let the bike idle for a few minutes & then shut it off.
I then started it again a few minutes later and it ran smooth and now I had throttle response. Engine light kicked off a minute later.
Took it for a ride and everything seems fine.
Was this the ECM self adjusting?? Do I need a tuner?
Appreciate any input....thanks. FYI - I have Thunderheader slip on exhaust.

Yes, you should re-map when changing to a higher flow intake. The intake combined with the higher performance slip-ons means more air and you are likely running lean. If you don't have a tuning device installed, I would pursue that then bring it to a GOOD tuner to dial it in on a dyno. If done right, you will have better performance, better mileage and you will be HAPPY. Plus, if (ahem...WHEN) you pursue additional mods down the road you are already set up to re-tune.

The ecm will adjust for the change to protect the engine but not performance. With a pipe change and high flow breather I also suggest either a remap or tuner to richen it up some.
