Need Help...Normal Oil Usage???

I have a 08 SE Dyna.
It is using a quart of oil in 1000 miles.
Harley says this is considered normal consumption.
Let me know if you have this type of usage or not.
I would like to show them how abnormal this really is
with your feed back.
I will be contacting my attorney because I feel they aren't
going to do anything about it.

Thanks for any feedback you can give me.

OK here is the chronology..

I used 1 1/2 qts in the first 1000 miles before bringing it in for the 1k.
After getting it back I still saw usage and brought it back to dealer. They
kept bike for a few days (why I don't know) but the ran it and checked oil while they had it. Before I took it back they topped it off to the top x on the stick. Bike had about 1050 miles. Now I have about 1400 and it is down a 1/2

Something ain't right. I would try another dealer and see if they will work with you. Its under warranty and the CVO have a really BAD wrap as of late, they should be aware of the problems.

Your dealer is full of it. Last 5 bikes... '86 FXR, '96 Road King, 2000, '05 and '07 Ultras.... changed oil at 2500 miles when using H-D dino oil, 5k changes using synthetic. Never, EVER have I had to add oil between changes. On a 5000 mile change I may have been down almost 1/2 qt, probably less.

The exception was the '05 Ultra. At around 7500 miles it started using a qt or more per 1000 miles. I sniffed around and did my homework first and discovered a Technical Service Bulletin indicated a change in the '05 valve seals due to consumption issues. The TSB indicated that dealers should inform customers that 1 qt per 1000 miles was not excessive. So naturally, when I went to my dealer with TSB in hand I made sure I told them I was using more than 1 qt/1000. Although the tech tip indicated the dealer should do a change and mark the dipstick and monitor it and go through all kinds of stuff to save the MoCo some warranty claims. My Service Manager thought it was a bunch of hogwash and just changed out the valve seals to the updated replacements. End of problem.

I can't imagine the stuff many folks had to go through if they didn't have a top-notch dealer. I'd suggest a call to Customer Service if your dealer continues to feed you the company line. A qt per 1000 miles might be normal on a car with 80 - 100,000 miles on it or a bike with high miles that's been beat. But in the first 1000 miles on a new bike, NO WAY!

You might want to sniff around on the CVO Forum and see what folks running those bikes have to say. There's a lot of gripes on those 110s.

Here is an update to my oil usage.

I had the bike in the shop so they could test a few things.. compression, leak down etc...
In the process the topped the oil off to 7X on the stick (FULL)
At this time the bike had 1104 miles. When I got it home I checked the oil cold which I always do
for an apple to apple check. I know it should be checked hot and I do it also. But to see how much I'm dropping I do it cold.
Back to my point...

As I said bike had 1104 with a full reading. I have since put 849 miles on the bike for a total of 1953 on the odometer.
The cold reading now is 1 1/2 X. So, I went from 7X to 1 1/2X in 849 miles, dam near a quart.
I consider this excessive, do you agree??
I am going to meet the Regional Service Manager nest week and your support may be helpful.

Thanks For Your Feedback!!

I have an 06 CVO Ultra and it never uses any oil, I have ridden multiple 1000 mile days in IBA events and never used any so you definetly have an issue.

I've got an '08 Dyna Low Rider FXDL. I didn't notice any oil leakage before the 1K check but that happened so quick I might missed it. After I got it back I rode about 1K checked it and it was down almost 1Qt. Thought that was odd and maybe I screwed up the check, my 1200 Sportster Custom burned zero oil so I was not checking as often as I needed maybe.

So no I get about another 2K under my belt and it's definitely burning oil fast. Talk to the dealer he tells me 1K per 1,000 is 'normal'. WHAT??? No way, not on a brand new bike under 8 months old?

So I get it in for the 5K and ask them to figure it out. They do leak down and compression check, 20% leakage. They order new pistons rings and hone cylinder and rering it. I got it back today. Ride out of the shop and on onto the highway. The vibration at 3-4K is practically vibrating my hands and feet off the bike? What the heck is this?? Definitely was not there before the piston job. I was late for an appointment and could not go back but called dealer later and taking bike back tomorrow am for vibration issue.

I did seem to have more power now and very strong acceleration. Just high frequency vibration on the whole bike from something??? Very noticeable at all rpm's but 3-4K it really shakes.

This 1 qt per 1,000 is BS as far as I'm concerned.
