Angry Well, add me to the list!

I have a 2008 SERK. Had the bike in to do some head work. Shop goes to check the run out and finds it to be .006. They said it damaged my cams and cam support plate. Now I have to have the bottom end torn apart, get the crank trued, and replace the cam support plate. Harley won't cover under warrenty b ecause they say .006 is within spec even though it caused all that damage.

Wow!!! Sorry to hear about your misfortune on such a new bike. How many miles on the bike?Did you have any other mods that might cause HD to frown upon your warranty service????

That's what I'm thinking. Hard to believe they wouldn't cover damage under warranty.

Apparently the way Harley dealt with the run out problem was to increase the spec from .003 to .009 which is ridiculous. Since mine was .006", it was "in spec". They said the damage to cam plate and cams was normal wear.

The bike has 4500 miles.

I bought it used about one month ago from Orlando Harley. As far as I know, the only mods were Screamin' Eagle Adjustable Pushrods.

Thanks Harley!

I traded in my Goldwing for THIS?

I cannot tell you how embarrassed I am that I have to explain to folks I ride with that my 4500 mile CVO Harley is in the shop having the motor rebuilt from the bottom up.

I would expect some warranty on the motorcycle. You'll need the dealer to go to bat for you. The dealer, or the dealer working with the MoCo should be able to repair damaged parts without cost to you.

I would tell them fix it or see you in court. I hate to see the MOCO getting away with this crap. They build a bad crank and wont cover the peice of $hit under warrenty.

eagle, why would someone go through the trouble of installing adjustable pushrods on a totally stock engine?

You bought an '08 without any warranty? Doesn't the original two-year warranty transfer?

Crank run out spec is now 0.012" and Mother Harley is very strict about this. If a dealer sends in a crank for warranty and the run out is less than spec. The dealer is charged back for the warranty repair............
They even sent the dealers TT324 which tells and SHOWS techs how to check the crank for run out!

My crank wiped out an oil pump and cam plate with a measured run out of 0.0055".

Whatcha gonna do?????

Trooper,

The warranty did transfer, the problem is that Harley says that the run out of the crank is within spec at .006", therefore the damage (or normal wear as MoCo calls it) is not covered.

I think that because this is such a widespread problem, Harley had to increase the "normal" spec or they would be responsible for all of these repairs under warranty.

My shop says this is the fourth '08 110ci crank they have sent for repair this month.

And find a way to contact those other 4 owners, place posts on every forum you can looking for others in the same situation. Write to every magazine out there with editorials about this problem. Make so much noise, call customer service repeatedly until they either fix it or you have enough other people to start a class action. Tell them they can either fix one or many!!

Who was going to do the head work? How did they find the damage and what made them look for it? I have been running .00425 run out with 110 hp and I have had no cam damage. Valve train is noisey though, which seems to be typical for these. (07 SERK) If thay aren't going to stand behind it now, who says they will later. I do all my own work, but I would never send someone to Harley for performance work. There are a lot better parts and shops available.
