Need Assistance Quickly!
My mother spends a lot of time alone in the north woods where the bear population is growing and she sees a lot of them.
I'd like to get her a pistol for protection.
She found a deal at a local gun shop for a re-built Glock 22 .40 cal.(rebuilt by Glock) that comes with some other things for $599. Here the link to the web site. Scrolling across near the top of the page it tells what's included. They let you shoot them before you buy it so she'll know what she'll get.
Personally I think the 23 .40 cal would be a littel better because it's more compact but I've never seen the two together.
Anyone have experience with these two and how they would do against a bear?
I'm meeting here there in an hour and a half so if anyone could give me any advise(she'll learn how to shoot it safely) on these guns or otherwise I'd realy appreciate it!
Justin

you want to drop it or piss it off ?
I agree .44 or bigger
have you thought about the bear spray ?
no harm to the bear and they may just stay clear of that area after a couple shots of pepper mist

I wouldn't trust anything less than .44 for grizzlys but for black bears I would think a .40 would be fine. Plus my mom is a small woman and she needs to be able to handle it easliy and carry it with her while hiking.
I have thought of bear spray but I'd like her to have the option of killing it if it decides that spray isn't eneough. I think she might actually have some spray. Shooting it would only be a last resort.
These black bears are actually pretty cowardly from what I've seen so the noise from a gun shot should be enough to scare it off. Heck, I've chased them off just by yelling and running at it. But there are a few cases of them coming after people and those are the ones I'm worried about.
Here's an intersting story.
Somewhere in N Wisconsin, a man was bow hunting from a tree when he saw a mom and baby bear walking toward him. The baby got spooked by something and ran straight up the tree the guy was in and got above him! The mom saw him between the baby and herself and climbed up and tore him out of the tree and mauled him! He survived but he'll probably carry a pistol now.
Anyway, thanks for the advise but I guess I didn't post this thread soon enough to get many responses. I have to go meat her and we'll see what the guys there have to say.

I have the Glock model 23 in the .40 cal. That price you quoted for the rebuilt Glock is more than what I paid for mine new!!!!I have the adjustable rear site also. The .40 cal is not enough firepower for a bear though!!!!he would laugh at you when you hit him !!!! .Like previously stated your going to need minium a
.44 mag,.45 auto,or a .50 Desert Eagle!!!! I wouldn't have my mother in the woods without one of these!!! Your going to need a large capacity magazine also!!!!!!

technical question
I think a .44 magnum or .50 eagle could stop a bear but can a standard 1911 .45 stop a bear?

SNORT!! I'd buy her a shotgun, unless she's out hiking around. And bear spray. And a bear-proof garbage container.

Tell us more. Make? Model? 1911-style pistol or something else? Here's mine, a Kimber Eclipse Pro II 1911.

Here's what she bought(you'll have to click on "modles" then "36"). A Glock 36 .45. It's slimmer than their standard pistols so she was able to get a solid grip on it. She also really liked one like yours, Bob, but the Glock was lighter also.
There were a few that she just loved the looks of but they were a little too heavy for her to feel comfortable with.
We'll be practicing with it around Thankgiving while at the lake house. She's really looking forward to it!

Yeah, my Kimber is fairly heavy for its rather small size. It has a steel frame, not aluminum. I've heard nothing but good things about Glocks. I just don't have any experience with them.

Personally if I were tromping around in bear country I would opt for a 45-70 but that might be a bit much for your mother.
At a minimum I would want a .44 mag with HP loads and most likely a carbine. It is easier to shoot a carbine in a stressed incident than control a pistol without extensive training.
Look around for a Winchester Trapper with a 16 inch barrel in .44 Mag.
And change out the front sight for a Hi Glo Fiber Optic post.
Just my opinion.
