Colt Handguns
Anyone know what is now happening at Colt as far as handguns are going? They have quit making so many of their fine handguns and I was wondering why. They seem to be centering on the defense rifle contracts and decreased the availability of some of their best civilian sellers such as the Diamondback, Cobra, Detective Special and of course the outstanding Python. I find it as a shame because they made GREAT handguns, although some were kinda pricey. I believe that the ones I mentioned above would be well received if they would put them back in regular (not custom special order) production.

Their contract with US Military for the M-4 is going to expire next June (09). The pressure is on them now, big-time, to address some issues with their biggest customer, the US Dept. of Defense, and I don't think they are concentrating on the one-and-done market anymore.

I thought Colt went out of the general public business altogether out of fear of lawsuits from victims and municipalities and were sticking to just military sales.

I don't think so Fred. http://www.coltsmfg.com/cmci/pistols.asp but I do think their focus is on the military http://www.colt.com/

I have two Colt revolvers. Sadly one of them is not the vaunted Python. But the company seems to have been outpaced in the 1911 market by manufacturers like Kimber and higher-end outfits like Wilson Combat, Les Baer and Ed Brown. I'm not up to speed on the rifle end of the spectrum.

I keep holding my breath waiting for them to start making DA revolvers again. I have passed up more than one deal on Pythons over the years. Deal days are over, though. Heck, I bough a new King Cobra for 350 bucks in 1990. Used, they are now bringing upwards of a grand...unbelieveable.

I know what you mean about looking for a decent deal on a revolver. I have been looking for a .38 spl. diamondback 4" or 6" in blue or nickel for a while. The ones I have found are either too overpriced or too beat up.

You have to pay if you want a quality revolver.

They did make a statement a few years ago in response to the new legislation or proposed legislation regarding the liability of handgun manufacturers.
I have four Colt Handguns. Four of the finest handguns I've shot, even compared with Kimber and the like.

Yep, I agree, but the Diamondback is beyond what I deem a fair price due to it being out of production and in somewhat demand. I have seen Pythons selling for less than Diamondbacks at the gun shows, that surprised me. The last diamondback I saw was used, had some scratches in the nickel and was $1,400. That's too rich for me, I wish mine wasn't stolen a few years ago.
I have a Cobra, an Official Police and two Pythons for revolvers along with five .45s and two .380s that are all Colt Autos. I just wanted a Diamondback to give the wife for a bedside revolver, but not at that price.

Colt spends their time making the only thing they know how to make.......EXCUSES!!!
Unfortunately, they are no longer the Colt Manufacturing Company we once knew. Now they are just a company run by a bunch of pencil pushers who are part of a larger company. The only thing they are making now is the SAA, and a .45 Gov't model. If you call them up and ask them why they are not bringing some of their classics back, they'll tell you they lost the tooling, or there is no market for them anymore. How come no one told Smith, or U.S. Firemarms? By the time the powers in charge get the message, they will be shutting the lights off for the last time. Thankfully, I have most of their classics already in my collection, and what I am still wanting is still available on Gunbroker and sites like that. The only thing keeping them in business is the Military, and that is soon to end.
AND......... If S & W had any brains, they would get rid of that dreaded locking mechanism that is keeping people busy on gunbroker looking for old models without the stupid locks!
Well, now I feel better!
