Semmerling LM-4
It weighs 24 oz., and it is 5.2 inches long, 3.7 inches tall and 1 inch thick. It is a manually-operated blow-forward repeater with a 5-shot capacity. It looks like an autoloader, but the slide needs to be operated by hand after every shot.
The original production run of the Semmerlings is highly collectible. The original producer is no longer in business, but they are currently made on an individual order basis by the American Derringer company. They cost $3500 apiece.

I am not much of a fan of Derringers, but they ARE small and can be had in .45 cal. The Para Ordinance Warthog is really small, but the grip is thick due to the double stack magazine (10 rounds I think). Glock 36 has a narrower grip due to single stack mag (6 rounds).

In semi auto, take a look at Taurus PT745PRO. Single stack 6+1.
BTW, in any short barreled .45ACP, you should try a 185 gr bullet for better accuracy.

I carry the Glock 30 with no problem but the 36 is single stack, smaller and nice. Kimber makes some nice compacts but are more expensive. 200gr+P TAP ammo works well for me also...

As an afterthought....
You might also want to check guns shows for a used all steel Interarms/Firestar, either in .45ACP or in 9mm. I shoot the single stack Firestar M43 in 9mm, which is quite accurate within a certain distance. A hot 9mm defensive load will do some serious work on someone wanting to harm you!
Prices for a used Firestar should range from $250 to $350.

AMT 45's seem small to me. Not sure if they are still made. And so are PARA Warthogs and Nitehogs. A Kahr 40 is close but not a 45 acp.

Not sure if it's the smallest but the Springfield Micro is pretty small. I have one and it has performed flawlessly. Personally I have something against the Para Ordnance non-customer service but maybe it was just a fluke.

Word to wise if you are thinking about 1911's smaller the 1911 in .45 the less reliable (don't care who builds it). I never would carry anything smaller than a Commander size .45. Though if I carried "old ugly" I'd carry a 5" in an IWB holster so length would'nt be an issue anyway.
Kahr (as mentioned above) is an excellent firearm. The .40's had issues back when they were first released but those seem to have been corrected. The .45 shows promise but have been out of the loop so I am unsure of its reliablity. I am a big fan of S&W's MP series in .45 I have seen those in R&D and they had promise.

I'm kind of fond of my Taurus PT145, small and it holds 10+1 of an old favorite, 230gr JHPs
