might as well ask here...

I'm looking to get an air rifle to plink cans in the back yard with... This is for the fiance as much as it is for me.

She likes to shoot, but finding a good place to go around here is a pain in the butt.

The problem is... the only thing I've ever known about BB guns is, the BB's went in one end, you cocked it, then it came out the other... what can I say, I was a kid.

Going to Bass Pro shop and seeing what they had was a huge eye-opener, and basically told me I knew nothing about these things.

Can anyone shed any more information on the subject?

I had a Crossman 760 whan I was a kid. I think they make a 766 also, pump air rifles. Plenty of power and last for a long time.

Lots of fun.

I have a RWS air rifle .177 that shoots a pellet at 1000FPS. Beeman and RWS (German) make top quality Air rifles, the most expensive and the heaviest. Some of the lesser expensive German air rifles are made in Spain and other countries. European quality seems to be most reliable.

Pellet size range from .177, .20 to .22. Spring cock and CO2 gas charge is available. If you decide on a scope for your air rifle, you will need a scope designed for air rifle use. Pellets come in all shapes and sizes. There is a special cleaning kit, lubricants and cleaning rod for air rifles. This you will need!

Google Beeman and RWS to see what's available. Also Google a review site for consumers who own air rifles. Try to avoid buying a Chinese air rifle unless finances dictate otherwise. Some air rifles made in China are junk and will soon break.

Be advised that many communities have restrictions on outdoor air rifle use within the city or town limits. So if you plan on shooting indoor, get a quality "Pellet Trap" for your target to save wear and tear on your walls.

Modern air rifles air nothing like the old crossmans. The new SINGLE pump guns get about the same FPS as a .22. Basically yo have to choose between a spring or pneumatic rifle, both kick azz. The GAMO rifles are very good reasonbly priced pellet guns that you can get at walmart, academy sorts, big5, etc. or online. They even have a varmit rifle that comes with scope, light, laser and muzzle brake allready mounted.

check out the Gamo sight:

I have a Beeman Goldfinger and I like it. Its .20 cal and pushes the pellet at about 1050 fps or so, subsonic. It will drive tacks.

I've never wanted to put too much $ into a pellet gun b/c I don't squirrel/rabbit hunt with them and after limited shooting I can't stand it any longer and have to find somewhere to shoot something that goes boom. Our BB guns have always been more for our child and the occasional nuisance critter intrusion into our yard. Crossman works for us; but so does Daisy! Good luck and don't forget eye protection.
