gun safe information wanted
I am looking for a gun safe, I know you get what you pay for ..so with that said does anyone know of place a 10 gun safe can be found that wont break the bank. I am more interested in keeping the boy out and or his friends. dont think its enought to just teach and tell and hope they listen.. will $450.00 buy anything respectable ?? fire isnt that big of a deal to me. All I have been seeing are like liberty , browning.. ect.. very good safes but I am guessing the name is 50% of the price.. I live in western Il.
any info will be appriciated.
thanks

If you are mainly worrying about curious kids, I'd opt for one of the 'gun lockers' that you can buy at Walmart. You can bolt them to the wall or floor to keep them from walking off. I'd additionally make sure you have cable locks on all of the guns to prevent a round from being chambered.
I am not a fan of gun locks but then again I don't have any kids in the house either. If I did, and if i didn't have a safe larger than most people's fridges, I'd use them.

Not sure if you have an Academy Sports in your area. They sell a Cannon American Eagle safe for about $580 that is a great unit. Good fire rating, and it is a 22 gun as well.
My advice is to buy larger than what you think you need, guns tend to multiply like rabbits....

Ssummers is right. Check out the Cannon. Tractor Supply has the same model he is talking about also. They put it on sale for between $500 and $600. My brothe has one. It's pretty nice. I'm going to buy one as soon as they run them on sale again.
The good thing about a Cannon is the warranty. Cannon pays for everything, including shipping both ways if it ever needs to go back. Sure, who would expect a gun safe to break? However, I did a little research on them and found that the Winchester ones like Sam's and Walmart sometimes sell have had lock troubles.
I just helped my dad move a nice Cannon Oxbow last week that he bought. It holds 42 guns. It is pretty big....40 inches wide and 900lbs. He got a good deal on it at $700.00, IMO.
You could always get a Harley Davidson safe. My buddy bought one of the big ones. It sure is nice, but he clearly paid for the HD name on it. I think it was around 3 grand 5 years ago.

This is what I did. I bolted mine to the wall. I also put it on concrete blocks to keep it off the floor in case I have a water issue.

SAFE v Gun Safe
I have a double door SCHWAB unit. It a Safe not a gun safe. A safe has various fire rating that relate to how long a document can withstand the heat and will not burn. Gun Safes typically do not have a fire ratings. Insurance companies like certain requirements on safes and might give you a discount on your homeowners policy if you comply with their requirements.
Before you go for a gun safe you need to decide if you wish to keep any paperwork inside it for fire protection. After that you can decide what you need. Also don't forget that long guns require a lot of space to store standing up. Its a shame to see the number of folks who pack long guns into a gun safe like they are storing can goods.
Most of the time bigger city classifieds will have used safes for sale at fair prices. It no big deal to get the combination changed. Basically there are two different lock typs used on most safes; either is easy to change for the mechanically inclined.

Toybox,
All of the true gun safes that I have looked at have fire ratings. They had a label inside the door that tells how long and to what temp the safe is good for.

Fort Knox
I went to an outdoors show and drooled at the safes but all were too expensive for my blood. So after a couple of years of doing that, one day the guy recognized me and said that he had one that dropped off the fork lift as they were unloading it. He gave it to me for a steal and he repainted it. It is gorgeous and if you if you didn't know it was dropped, you would not notice. I believe that if you buy a cheaper safe that an axe can cut through and without the fire protection, you will regret it. Just take the $500 and put it away, and next year take another $500 and go buy it.
I have never been sorry that I bought my Ft Knox, not one day. It is just what I needed and wanted.

I bought ammo boxes and put a hasp and lock on them. I focused more on securing ammo than guns themselves.

That's what i did. Bought used safe from a business and lined it etc. Walls are filled with concrete so it is not going to walk off. Door has the lock bolts on all 4 sides. I left a shelf at the top to store other items of value...

How old is "the boy"? When people live together, they tend to find out a lot about each other. If you are really worried, I would put them in another location, kids will find out just about any secret that you have, it is in thier nature. If "the boy" is older than 10, he should be taught gun safety now, I wish I had been. The proper teaching is the most important thing for them. If they start out with paintball guns, they learn to think of people as targets. The most important thing that he can be taught is NOT to point a gun at any person, unless you are in immeadite danger.
Locking them away makes them an attractive nuisence, and they will find a way to see the forbidden. Take the mystery out of it, teach him how to use, care for and have him clean them after each use. This is the best way.

Yes, by all means, take the boy(s) out and teach him to handle a firearm. Let him see and feel what comes out of the end of a .44 magnum. I'm sure he will acquire a respect for what happens out in front of a gun barrel. I feel that all kids in middle school school should be subject to this learning. Maybe we would have less gun violence and more respect for others

I got an American Eagle from Cabela's for a birfday gift from my parents. Holds 20 long guns with shelves on the other side for hand guns, ammo and whatever else I need to lock up. When Pa bought it for me, I didn't want it. Now that I've had it for a year, it indispensable. Make sure you get a safe dehumidifier to keep it dry on the inside.

I've been happy with my Sentry from Wally World (I think it was, anyway). It's not fireproof, but my only real gripe is that I now need another one or one twice as big. Don't buy what you think you need, buy what you think you might need someday. And then some. They're a bitch to get up and down stairs.
I also like the small gun vaults you can find at Cabela's and other places - perfect for keeping a self-defense handgun near the bedside or wherever you want it, bolted securely in place. It has a lock you can open by feel without a key, and a backup barrel key. Much better than leaving a loaded weapon in the nightstand drawer.

Got a nice, good looking Liberty safe for my $$ guns, all others outside the safe, most out of site. My kids are good around them ( they can shoot em if they want ) The safe is mainly to keep my paranoid democrat relatives from bitching. A trigger lock or empty gun is a club.
