Do not know if you already left for your trip but here goes:
You mentioned Rhinelander area...I have a log cabin retreat on Lake Nokomis just north of Tomahawk...less than 20 miles SW of Rhinelander.
Most all restaurants, watering holes, motels, etc are very biker-friendly since there is a HD factory in Tomahawk. I believe there are daily, free tours of factory...it is a good tour as they paint tin and make other parts like windshields and side cars. There is actually a couple different factory locations but the tour at the newer factory location(Kaphaem Road) should be your first stop, if you are interested. Rhinelander itself is OK, but the surrounding smaller towns are much more enjoyable to ride thru and spend time in.
If you are in area on a Friday evening check out one of the many all-you-can-eat fish frys...a Wisconsin tradition.
If you have time you can rent a pontoon for a half day thru Tomahawk Sports Center and enjoy some time on Lake Nokomis or Lake Mohawksin(actually the Wisconsin River). Great resurgence of bald eagles, loons, etc on many of the local lakes.
Most of the roads are two-lane, except US 51 is divided 4-lane till it intersects with Highway 8. If you are traveling during the week traffic will not be heavy.
There still are a few of the older resorts that have log cabins, etc. It is a great way to immerse yourself in the local culture unless you demand a spa!?! Just make sure you get a cabin near a lake so the ducks can wake you in the morning!
If you are into stopping at smaller out-in-the-middle-of-nowhere HD dealers for local "stuff", try to get to the Nothern Lights dealer in Arbor Vitae. Their located on right side US 51 maybe 3+ miles north of Minocqua/Woodruff area. Minocqua is a touristy town on the weekends but should be easy riding during the week. Lake Minocqua is a beautiful lake also, and Minocqua is actually a big island. There is also a larger dealer 40 miles to the south in the Wausau area.
Make sure you bring some warmer clothing if you plan on biking after 8PM. It can get downright cool as you meander near many of the local lakes. And as stated before...after dusk watch out for many deer, and maybe an occasional bear or coyote.
Also, Eagle River is a beautiful town to ride to...approx 35-40 miles NE of Rhinelander. I do not spend enough time there to give you any local info, but their chain of lakes is beautiful from what I hear.
If you have any questions on area I can be reached at:
d.white479@comcast.net as I do not get to this site daily.
And just incase your trip gets postponed or you want to come back...the second weekend after Labor day is the Tomahawk Fall Ride. Lots of fun without the congestion of Daytona, etc. HD will have 2008s to test ride, Ultra&Sportster raffles, etc.
Here's the link to this fun weekend:
