How to register a kit bike

I'm thinking about building a kit bike (like a bike in a box). It sounds like a good project for the winter months.

Does any how how to register a kit bike? Is it a pain in the a$$? I live in CA but I've like to hear anyone's experiences regardless of their state.

Register it as a four seat econobox. You'll save money in the long run.

Sorry. I really have no idea. Call your DMV or Tag office, they should have the info.

I've been involved in building a few from scratch, both in Mississippi and Louisiana. Each state has it's own line of BS to go thru. Basically, you need to make sure that you have a certificate of origin on engine and frame. It always helps to keep paperwork handy on everything you buy too. Once built, it requires an inspection by whoever the state sets up to do it. State police down this way do that but may be different in CA.

It's not real difficult, just can be a PIA depending on the inspector.

Go to :

Ask for Ken Wolfe.

He builds custom/ kit bikes for a living and has to deal with it all the time.

creeker, I was going to go the same route that you are considering...Until...I talked to some folks at work and they told me it can be a BIG PIA to register with DMV. One of the other difficulties that I was told about is, that insurance companies don't like to insure the bike unless it was built by a authorized mechanic. What's authorized?...I dunno, but I do know that I'm not.

As I stated these were things I was told by others people. I figured it was gonna be way too much of a PIA to deal with, so I dropped the idea and I'm gonna to buy a '04 DWG instead. Another thing some need to consider when giving their input is, that creeker and I live in the Soviet Socialist Republic of California. So the laws out here are much different than most states. To make a long story short, I never researched exactly what needs to be done. Living in SSRC was enough to convince me that it was gonna be too big of a PIA.

Registration is not a huge hurdle in PA, However, you can forget about insurance.

PA DOT erred and titled my recently restored 47EL as a special construction. I could not get insurance from anyone.

I had 4 bikes through Dairyland MC insurance at the time (for years with no claims). I told them that i was leaving if they did not insure it. They said "we are sorry to lose your business."

Luckily PA DOT fixed their error and gave me a 47 title and all is well.
