Question Need some advice on FXRT purchase!!

Hey all, been a loooonnnggg time since I have been on here, but I finally got all logged back in and ready to go. I recently ran across a 1983 FXRT shovel that can be purchased reasonable due to a death in the family. Here is some history on the bike. It was ridden early in 2007 and parked, no prep, just parked. The old girl is missing ALL the original RT parts (fairing, lowers, bags and sealed chain), and I really doubted it was an FXRT till I got the VIN off the frame (1HD1ECK20DYxxxxxx). The bike is complete and the only thing I can find that is not original (other than missing RT parts) is an updated evo CV carb. It comes with the original carb and aircleaner and is in overall good condition for sitting in an unprotected barn for a few years. The owners son wants $3500 for it..........what do you guys think. I am a strong mechanic and was thinking about picking it up for a second bike to ride all weather, all season. This would keep the miles off my 06 softail and the chrome shiny. I love the looks and sound of an old shovel, but would like some input on riding one 7,000 to 9,000 miles a year. Thanks in advance, Brian

One thing that is great part is the frame is made to fit the EVO. The motor is a Shovel. That means that there is lots of room above the heads. I had the front head gasket blow out on my 1982. I was 600 miles from home. I got the head gasket from the local HD dealer. Took the tools I had with me and a set I got from WalMart and replaced the gasket. This without removing the gas tank. I then cleaned the tools from WalMart. With receipt in hand, returned the wrenches and got my money back.

I had a left turn lady total my 1982 FXR. I replaced it with an Ultra Glide. I miss my FXR

Ok, looks like the FXR has a pretty good following..... I got the bike out of the barn yesterday and gave it a GOOD looking over. It is really hard to roll, I am guessing I will have to rebuild calipers and new pads. It will need a new battery for sure. It is missing all the turn signals, and for some odd reason the the rear brake resevoir is gone. It does look like it will clean up pretty well and the chrome looks good on most things. The inside of the tank is rust free, but has some stale gas "funk" goin on. The right side fork tube has some pretty heavy rust up between the triple trees, none down by the sliders. The bike also has a nice looking le-pera seat, looks like a badlander style and sissy bar with the stock seat on it. The original carb and aircleaner are on a shelf and go with it. I have a call in to the son and I am gonna try to work something out on it. I will keep you all posted and put some pics up on my webshots if I can get the old girl........

I know I shouldn't, but...

There isn't much that's lower than cheating and stealing. Bragging about it qualifies. I'm glad I don't hang out with you.

I hope you can do something with it. The first big twin I rode was a friend's new '82 FXR. Today I ride a '93 FXRT. I love 'em. Do keep us posted.
