Question Difference between '84-'86 and '87-'94 FXR exhaust?

I have noticed that many of the aftermarket FXR exhausts out there say that they fit '87-'94 models. I have an '86 FXR, and I was wondering if anyone could tell me what the difference is.

I did a little research, and it seems that there was a new exhaust bracket introduced in '87. Could I simply buy that bracket to adapt a '87-'94 exhaust to my '86 FXR, or are there some other differences that would affect things (such as the different transmissions perhaps)? Also, are the frames exactly the same?

I suppose I could always fabricate some custom brackets to make it work, but if I can just buy the bracket from '87, that would definitely save some time. Unfortunately, I don't know of any other FXRs in my area that I could take a look at for reference, so any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Paul

Plus one on this question. I have an 85 FXRS. All the exhaust listings cover shovelheads or skip to 87.

springer- will become famous soon enough
Several things changed in 87. On the 82-86 FXR frames there is a little bracket with a small rubber mount for the exhaust, in 87 that went away. At the same time the 87 got a new transmission trap door with a new cover. On the 82-86 transmission they had double triangle type shape and in 87 it was rounded. When they did away with the rear exhaust mount they added a bracket to the cover and that bracket only fits the 87-up transmissions.

The basic answer to the question is, no you can't just buy the bracket for the transmission and bolt it all on. However it should be easy to fab something to retro fit the 87-up exhaust to a 84-86 EVO FXR since most of the rest of the mounting is the same.
