Every gear is neutral help?

Ok this is what happened, I started the bike while it was in first gear.
And it lurched forward a little (oh sht duh ok but no big deal right?).
Then I put it in neutral and start it again and every gear I put it in is like I am putting it in neutral. I get no response, nothing. the clutch feels fine and I can shift into all the gears but they just don't engage.
What do you think I did. Am I screwed or what?
My bike is an 86 fxrs-sp with a ball clutch. any thoughts before I go to the shop would be nice thanks.

I would suggest looking at the belt to see if it is still conected. It has happened to me.

Look to see if the splines are stripped in the drive pulley, (mounted to the transmission). Pretty common. You may be able to go in from the rear.....use something to poke at that pulley, see if it wobbles at all, you may be able to check it going in from below the starter solenoid.

Thanks for the help.
I'm gonna tear it apart after work and I'll let you guys know what it was.
A friend has offered to give me his fxr transmission for free it's like new with andrews gears in a delcron case. He upgraded to a baker six speed and said I could have it, how cool is that?

OMG asloan you were right.
I feel so stupid. I trucked it over to my buddy's and the first thing out of his mouth was where's your belt? Very embarrassing I don't know how I missed that I mean it's right there.
I think I was in shock for a full 5 min or so lol. Anyway, I ended up replacing both pulleys front and back because they were both worn pretty bad and bought a new gates belt. When we got it all put back together and I sat on it to adjust the belt I noticed it was like sitting on a hard tail. Long story short somehow I broke my Koni shock on the right side and it won't compress anymore.
Now I'm just waiting on a new set of 11.5 in Progressive 418s I got off of eBay for 250.00 to my door.
Thanks I wish I would have read your post before going to my buddy's, would have saved me some face and a lot of digs from him. lol
