TDUFF you could use a easy bracket or gost braket on all but the earlist fxr's and with those you could bolt on about any saddle bag, hard or soft front. I would use the easy bracket, just better .Lots of leather baggs do have some hard back todayeven my cheap throw overs for carolina leather have plastic back. You could also contact Elis's place about police bags ,,maybe, or watch ebay for a nice set of hard bags and bolt to easy brackets or adapt.

FXRP bags sit inside mounts kinda like a chrome steel cage. You'd need the bags and the mounts. LeatherLyke has quick disconnect hard bags with mounts in 2 styles for FXRs.

removing your leather bags for hard fxrp bags

you can install FXRP bags on your 92 FXR but you will have to change the fender struts to earlier FXR Style in order to get the FXRP saddlebag bracket holes to line up. I've got a 92 FXR and did the same thing. Once you buy the FXRP rear fender struts and FXRP hard saddlebags and brackets you will also have to change your upper belt guard to the earlier version as well. The reason for the belt gaurd change is because the earlier style fender struts have the shock mounting hole about 2" further back than the later style struts. You can still use the same shocks however this raises the back of the bike by about 1.5" because the shock is now in a more straight up and down position. Now because the shock is in a more straight up position, they no longer fit into the groove in the upper belt guard. With the shock in the new position you will find your bike actually handles much better as it changes the trail on the front end and puts more pressure on the front forks kind of like a sport bike. You will also find that your bike will lean over a little more when parked so you may want to change the kick stand to an FXRP version as well. I didnt change the kick stand but everything else I did and love it!

I took a dremel to mine, cut off about 1 inch and tapered the cuts top and bottom and the upper belt guard is good to go. +1 on the front forks being pushed down, and the increase in lean with the kickstand.
