What year do you have? IIRC, 84-99 are all about the same and should interchange...
I'm no HD expert, but I know that the '85 wideglide I painted a few years back, ran the same style 'flatside' softail tanks...
There may have been a change in the 90s...
Someone will surely chime in with some more info......

If it uses a split tank, then 84-99 should work. HOWEVER, in 97 I believe they changed the filler hole style...or actually it may have been mid 96, so your caps may not work if you get the newer 'recessed' style'. I have a 96 Heritage, and I run 5 gals on mine, instead of the 4.2's...

The FXR's never came with the split tanks, they were all one piece tanks. The mounting is very different and would be difficult to fit. If you want larger capacity I would at what the aftermarket has to offer.

I'm not sure I would put Softail tanks on an FXR. The main reason is that the FXR frame flares out at about the back 1/4 or so of the tank. The Softail tank tunnel is flat all the way back and the flare will run into where the rear of the tank should be. The rear of the tank will have to be raised up above the flare in order to fit.
A Dyna tank will do the same.
A much easier swap is a tank off an FLH, FLT, something like that. They have the requisite "flare" on the back of the tank and all that is needed is minor welding of the brackets and if your gauges are on the tank, you'll need to relocate them to the handlebar clamp.
I'm not all that good at verbose descriptions, but if you take a quick look under the rear of your FXR tank on your FXRS, then look at pictures on eBay of the tunnels of various Harley tanks you can see what I am talking about.

Ok,.. all good answers but no one said they have done it. I have had the same dilema, there are NO aftermarket 5 gal. tank for FXR !! the new Harleys have 6 gal. the previousous was a 5 gal. any tank you try to use will need some modifications eather to the tank or the frame, flat side tanks will need to mod the frame, not a good choice! so heres what I did, the softail deuce has a 4.9 gallon, you will need to mod the tank and the seat, its looking real good. if you want more info let me know!

Here is a Fatbob Tank on my 93 XL as you can see in the picture. Here are some pictures showing how it sits on the frame. Don't know if any modifications were done to it. Bought the bike this way. Hope this can help!

All I know for sure is that they are compatible with an 85 wideglide. That I know, as I painted one...

I have a 86fxr, They all have a wide center scection that will need some work to the frame and or tank. There is NO bolt on except to a stock size or smaller tank. If you want larger be ready to spend more money. Can you say Custom.

An 85 Wide Glide is not built on an FXR frame.

Thanks Springer. I wasn't really sure...just knew that the 85 WG and the softail splits were compatable.

Take a set of Softail tanks and have a 6 inch wide strip of metal welded in between them. It worked on this bike. Could be part of the reason it cost 50 grand....

Why not just widen a FXR tank in the same fashion? Or weld in two strips, one on each side of center (one piece tank)?
