90 fxrs - a couple questions

Greetings,

I just bought a 1990 fxrs locally and I've put about 400 miles on it so far. I have accumulated a couple questions. Here goes:

#1 When I look up my VIN on harley's website it just says 1990 fxrs. The guy selling it was calling it a super glide. I told him I was certain it was a low rider just by looking at it. Can someone confirm that a 1990 fxrs is indeed a low rider, and not a super glide? Someone posted a "history of the fxr" thread, and I read it but it doesn't go into specifics on model numbers....etc. You would think that HD's VIN number lookup would give a little more info. Confirmation?

#2 The bike has forward controls installed and they work properly. I would like to install foot boards in conjunction with the pegs. I have J&P catalogs along with a whole slew of other aftermarket parts peddlers, but none of them have specifically what I'm looking for. Is there a kit to add full driver foot boards to a 1990 fxrs with aftermarket forward controls? Does having forward controls matter? Could it cause a fitment issue? Anyone? The reason I am looking for some foot boards is that the peg on the brake side isn't long enough (air filter cover on my knee gives me a bad angle on the peg). Maybe I just need a peg extension.

That's it for now. anyone have some suggestions?

Congratulations.....I hope you discover and enjoy many years of enjoyment!

Actually ,yes it does go into specifics on "models" but you have to click on that particular reply which within the thread is reply #14 at the bottom and a whole list of years shows up....lol...anyway here are the models for 1990 (minus the FXRP):

90-FXR Super Glide <~~~as you can see the Super Glide would have only been identified with the symbols of an FXR and then the "Super Glide" name attached, and the super glide would have come with a silver engine....
90-FXRS Low Rider this engine would be "black wrinkle"
90-FXRS-SP Low Rider Sport Edition
90-FXRS-Conv Low Rider Convertible
90-FXLR Low Rider Custom
90-FXRT Sport Glide

Technically the only one listed as "ONLY" AN "FXRS" is the FXRS Low Rider.
If you go to the "let's see everyone's FXR" here in the V~Twin Forum, at the end "Grinder" has provided photos of his bike and while it's a 1988 his bike is an excellent representation of what an FXRS "appears" as.

I unfortunately the way you have posted the photo of your bike I am unable to view it as a non-paying member.

UPDATE:
Actually I noticed you posted into the "Let's see everyone's FXR" thread here within the FXR Forum and was actually able to view the photo of your bike, for your information "Grinder's" 1988 FXRS is on page 18 of that thread, the page previous to where yours is at. Anyway based upon the photo of your bike, it's "most" likely [I say most likely as it's always possible that unless you talk with the original owner to know for sure or with HD] a FXRS Low Rider since as I mentioned above the tank is set up as stated with the intstruments of the speedo and tac positioned vertically and in the center, however I do notice that you have a chrome instrument housing so that's something someone added, you also DO have the "black wrinkle" engine with chrome rocker boxes, which would not have been placed on the FXR Super Glide and of course the risers and handlebars are not stock they were add ons. Someone will have to either confirm this or deny it but the 21" spoke wheel is not stock either [I don't believe"] as the bike should have come with a 19" mag wheel.....but I am in need of help to confirm.....and of course I am then not sure about the fender whether that is the stock fender as well....and of course the rear wheel being spoked is I believe an aftermarket as well.....but it could have been an option....most of the ones I have seen however all are shown with mag wheels, obviously you have already pointed out the forward controls and of course the exhaust is not stock. It certainly is a beautiful bike!!!! the way it is set up now however!!!!

I can say this, the most "prominent" feature that distingishes the FXRS Low Rider from the other models is that it's the only model that has the tank with the fuel gauge on the left and on the right is the fuel filler location while down the center is a "black wrinkle" tank trim piece with the instrument housing riding atop of it with the speedo and tac in a verticle line. At the "History" thread there are several photos showing different years of the FXRS that should provide you a "visual" to what it looks like.

I might suggest that you actually contact HD at:
Harley-Davidson Customer Service Representative call (414) 343-4056 and provide your HD VIN# and they should be able to identify exactly what it is....perhaps the website is not as equipped to do so....It always good to call them anyway and identify yourself as the new owner. Every VIN# is coded in such a way as to identify certain aspects of the bike....it's fairly complicated and it's all I can do to understand the FXR2's and FXR3's and FXR4's. So give them a call they should confirm what you are searching for.

Basically the only FXR's to have "footboards" were really the FXRT's and the FXRD when it was out briefly....perhaps others here can address this very item but I know they are very difficult to come by....and as to whether they will work in conjunction with forward controls I would have no experience to say yes or no......Hopefully some FXRT owners will read this and give you some help......

If I can be of any further assistance feel free to pm me.

Welcome to the FXR "FAMILY" it's a great bike and as I said above I hope you find many wonderful times with your bike.....

Regards,

"Classic"

The guy that you bought it from is another of us 'old timers' who grew up in the 3 motorcycles from Harley era....you either had a Sporty, an Electra Glide or a Super Glide (big twin with a narrow (sporty) fork) BTW welcome to the family brother!

I put forwards and Floor-Boards on my fxrs-sp. The boards come off a police model. I love the combination of the boards and forwards, it is an all day bike now on trips. I didn't like where the shifter was mounted so I fabricated a shifter mount where the touring bikes have there shifter mounted (front of primary).
You can find the floorboards on ebay once and a while, you will also need the brake linkage assembly and will need to change out the clutch cable housing with one from a later model touring bike. The clutch cable will rub on the rear brake linkage.
Ask me how I know

Can you post the pic another way? It won't let me view extensions without a premium membership.

Yup,most of us consider all FXRs in the "Superglide family" thus it's a Superglide.
A Lowrider is a Superglide varient.

Same as an XLT touring or or an XL Roadster is a Sportster because they are in the XL Sportster family of bikes.

I'm 6'2" and trying to ride my FXR with the stock center pegs left me looking and feeling like a monkey screwing a basketball. I put the Kuryakin forward controls on and now have a bike I can ride!!

I bet. I'm only 5'11 and the forward controls are great, but my right knee is is bad shape. I'd like a place to rest my feet on longer rides. My air breather causes a bad angle on my right knee. I have forwards installed and they feel good, just would be nice to have a foot resting place a little closer to mid bike.

Thanks for the consideration. There certainly seems to be a lot of aftermarket to this bike. It's nice to get some information, so thanks. The VIN number lookup on Harley's site just says 1990 fxrs, so a phone call would be in order, as you say.
