question

Hi,

I’m new here and a new owner of a 1993 Harley Fxrs-conv. I wanted to get your opinion on what is a good oil to use. I have looked around and saw that the Mobile 1 20w-50 vtwin, is one of the common standards and that’s what some guys I know use, but their bikes are newer than mine. Is this a suitable oil to use in my bike as well? Any help would be appreciated. I also wanted to know if a majority of people use Premium fuel or if you use regular unleaded. Thanks and I look forward to learning as much as I can about my new ride.

Joe

Synthetic oil can leak from gaskets that are old, so it might not be a good idea. A guy I know that builds custom bikes and repairs Harleys told me to use 25W-60 oil because it withstands the heat from the air-cooled engine better. Drag Specialties sells it and you can use it year round.

I don`t think synthetic 20W50 oil will leak more than regular oil . I have full synthetic Motul 20W50 in my bike (93 and about 40k miles) and it doesn`t leak (too much )

25W60 is good for hot weather with temperature above 80*F. I think "standard" 20W50 will be good enouh for most riders . Of course if somebody is riding his bike in the deserts or city traffics it is better to have SAE 60 (or 25-W60) oil. Overe here (central Europe) I use only 20W50 and sometimes 10W40 in cold weather.
