upgrading my front end

Hi folks, i have an 86 FXR and I want to upgrade my puny forks to some 41MM or bigger and would like to put an inverted setup on. Seems pretty hard to find something that states can be used for that year/model. I was wondering if I can adapt other year/model forks to run on my bike without custom fabrication. HMMM, any suggestions, doos and don'ts?
Thanks

Oops, misunderstood the title

I was under the impression "upgrading my front end" was about

I'll start paying attention to member names from now on

Maybe contact HHI, Mean Street, and American Suspension.

Most all will take some work usally around the streeting stops. Check out JIREH catalog or web. They sell others people stuff at very reduced prices. Allways have a 49 or 51mm on sale for around 499. Or check out some use sport bike markets for front ends . You might pick up a gsx font end complet for 250 and you do have to do some machineing on the shaft on the trees but has been done . Read about it here a couple months back.

Not cheap, but try Stortz Performance:

How about just upgrading stock 41mm Harley tubes with a progressive spring kit and a high quality fluid and installing them in a wide glide set of trees. Much cheaper, and you can tailor the ride using different spring spacers. The progressive kit comes with the spacers and they can be cut down if you want with a standard saw. I upgraded my narrow front end with progressive and spent some time experimenting with different spacer lengths and fluid weights and now she rides smooth as glass and handles as if she were on rails. Wide glide tubes are a dime a dozen. It's what you put in them that counts. I recommend a fork brace with a wide front end. With a narrow glide it isn't necessary. I did put one on my narrow glide however.

i know on my 92 i ran into several problems for a bolt on unit. one was i have the self canceling signals from the odometer which means i have to keep the speedo gear unit mounted on the axle. i used lower sliders from 86-99 softail, tubes and internals from an 07, a custom axle to use my stock brakes and speedo unit made by custom cycle and a 6 degree tree. i still have some work to do making the stock headlight work. you will never find and easy bolt on set up, you will have to figure something out.

Any body got any feed back on the performance and handling difference a +2" fork and 5 degree rake trees makes. I have been looking at the Ultima 58MM inverted forks. I like the way my bike handles now, maybe theres not that big of difference except in the look of the front tire pushed out a bit more.
