pumping out oil

I just aquired an 81 fxw and when I start it oil starts running out of the overflow tube and the primary is drowning. Is there a check valve that is sticking somewhere?

Man, this section is FXR specific. You might have better luck in the pre-EVO section. Good luck.

You have a manual?? Buy one . There is a check ball and spring in the oil pump and your bike can leak oil back into the engine case. You check with out running??? and refill tank then start bike and to much oil ,got to go some where. There are ways to fix. Has beencoverd in mags and sites. It is not hard but might go to a shovel head shop in your area to help. You might just replace the ball and spring and (fix) the problem. It does involve laping in the ball seat by epoxy'n the old ball to a old push rod and use'n a drill and lapp'n compound to make the seat rite.

pumping out oil

On my 79 Lowrider it started doing that soon after I changed all the hoses on the oil pump. I don't remember which one, but I eventually found one going to the back of my inner primary was loose. When I tightened it up, no more oil out the vent hose....

Someone had mentioned the check valve spring was getting sprung, but even after checking it, no go. It was the hose on back of the inner primary.....
