Lightbulb 1987 FXR front end & exhaust

Fellow FXR brethren,

I want to convert from the narrow to the wide glide front end, but don't want to spend the coin on a conversion kit. What other model wideglide fronts will fit my FXR? Additionally, what is my current fork size, 35mm or 39mm?

Exhaust: Currently I have 1 3/4" slash-cut drags on the bike. What will switching to Santee 225s w/ torque cones do to the performance? I know it will be louder, but do the torque cones really help from torque loss?

I'm a mild DIY and trying to expand my knowledge. Thanks for your help

I can't help you about the front end stuff, but I have become a believer in torque cones. I know that there are probably just as many who say that torque cones are junk, but in my experience, I think they work. You won't see a huge difference, understand, but the last time I swapped pipes (went from Khrome Werks staggered duals/tapered mufflers to V&H StraightShots) I tried the V&H pipes both without and with torque cones and really believe I could tell a SOP slight difference in torque pulling out of a sharp turn without downshifting, for example. I rode the same local route both with the cones and without. The V&H pipes allowed for more upper RPM power than the KW (expected) but until I put the cones in, I had also lost some torque (also expected). Addiing the cones brought the torque back and I still had the upper RPM power.

The Khrome Werks pipes I had came with cones welded into the head flanges. They know a thing or two about exhaust. I later installed their HP Plus baffles in the V&H pipes. Took the edge off the loudness, no loss of power or torque, and got a more pleasing sound overall. All improvements over the V&H cheese grater sleeve baffles.

Cool, man, thanks for the info. I think I'll go with the cones. It doesn't sound like I will lose anything from installing them. If I need anymore backpressure, I'll do that bolt/washer thingy.
