Just sold my Short Shots. Went to a good 2:1. Never tried the SS's without the baffles. Low end torque sucked bad enough with the baffles in. They look good and sound good, but there's a sayin' in South Texas... "Puro panza, no chili". (All fat, no pepper)

i hear ya man. what 2 in 1 did you go with? i am looking for some new pipes. it's just that i love the look of the shorties, that's the only reason i got them. they are just not what i thought they would be as far as performance.

I understand. Had the SS's put on mine on delivery.
Got a set of Python 2:1's about a month ago. Difference in low-end torque is unbelievable. Haven't seen any dyno numbers on these pipes yet (they're new on the market). They have a straight muffler instead of that mud-fence-ugly megaphone. Very good fit and finish. The logo is in the same spot and style as V&H. Rumor says that V&H makes 'em for Drag Specialties, and I can believe it. Not near as high dollar as T-headers or Pro-pipe either.
I'm not sayin' they're God's gift to Harleys, but I sure like 'em.

The simple answer to your question is that most folks that have been around awhile will confirm that taking the baffles out of any pipe will cause a low end loss. It has to do with the loss of back pressure that the engine needs to produce torque.....or something like that.
I have the V&H Pro Pipe 2 into 1 and love it. You kind of get caught between a rock and a hard place here really. I don't think you will ever find a 2 to 1 that can match the great sounds of a dual pipe setup....and I don't think you will find a dual setup that can match the torque or low end available with the 2 to 1. Dyno experts may chime in and sight cases where my theory doesn't hold water but then again I am not an expert.....just read a bunch! I tried taking the baffle out of my Pro pipe once to see if I could get the sound up. Didn't notice any reportable loss in low end but what did happen is that the pipe actually sounded worse. When up on RPM's it sound terrific, but down low it sound very "tin canned" for lack of a better description. Hope some of this helps. I have gotten rave comments on the Pro pipe because you just don't see very many.
