Question New rider likes rhineharts but has questions...

I'm the happy owner of a new Road King Custom but I have a million questions. I've been reading posts for a couple weeks trying to learn some stuff and have questions still lingering. Any help would be appreciated and I apologize for how basic the questions may seem...this is the first bike I've owned.

I've just ordered the Rhinehart True Duals. I'm wondering:
-what are the necessary modifications I need to make when I put the new exhaust on
-what I should have dealer do vs. what I can have friends with experience working on bikes help me do
-what order things need to be done in

I'm thinking of going with Screaming Eagle air cleaner, stage 1 kit, and PCIII.

I had questions about the PCIII vs. the HD race tuner? Dealer told me they used to use PC but race tuner is now better product and allows for more adjustments. Also as HD product, it is better suited for bike. I am very hesitant to believe everything the dealer says. I know they are out to sell their products. The race tuner seems to be far more of a product than I really need. I am not looking to make any engine modifications and it is considerably more expensive than the PCIII. I have a couple friends using the PCIII and they like it. I just question it's reliability. I don't want it cutting out on the trip I'm taking out west in a month and I don't want to be messing with tuning it all the time like some of them do. I'm also under the impression if I go with the PCIII then I don't need the stage 1 kit? Is this correct? I thought the stage 1 kit with the PCIII might be good idea.

Also wondering if anyone has put the rhineharts on a RK Custom or any other bike? Is this a job I should feel comfortable letting friends who have experience working on bikes help me with(or do for me while I watch and learn)? Being a complete exhaust system, I am figuring it requires a lot more work than slip ons. Anyone had a problem with the Rhineharts fitting on the RK Custom? I thought I read something about a floorboard or foot peg getting in the way? What about the other things, the a/c, PCIII, stage 1? I am thinking dealer has to do stage 1 and possibly the a/c, then I can do PCIII at home? What order do I do things in? Exhaust, then stage 1 and a/c, then PCIII?

Thanks for your time in reading this. I hope to learn more so my future questions are not so lame.

Your question is not lame, its very good. Before you do anything call the the factory techs for all aftermarket add-ons. If you use an H-D dealer to work on your bike ask customers waiting for their bikes, if they were happy with the service, interview mechanics at the H-D dealer. A good mechanic is like a good doctor!! Also take your time.

I have Rinehart true dual, AN big sucker air filter kit, and a DFO. I will install these items this weekend. From reading posts in this forum, If you have good mechanical ability it should not be difficult. I ordered all parts off of the internet. I also read here if you do the exhaust first you may not need stage one flash done, but if you do intake first you will need the flash, because you will be lean. I suggest do what you can to your ability, or have a reputable wrench do the work for you.

I went with True Duals, PCIIIusb, and SE air cleaner kit, and no ECM flash.
I talked to techs at Dynojet, BUB and HD service before deciding. Dyno jet said ECM flash is a waste of money and explained why the PCIII takes care of this. HD service said flash is required when doing stage one, they couldn’t explain what the flash actually does but HD requires it. From my understanding it changes air/fuel ratio and increases rev limit.

I rode my 04 Road Glide stock for 1000 miles, then did the upgrades. I don’t think the order of installing upgrades matters unless you plan on doing one upgrade then riding. I installed SE air cleaner first, then exhaust, then PCIII (downloaded map before installing). After install was done then fired it up. Make sure to wait 12 hours to let high temp adhesive cure or you will be blowing it out the exhaust. Anyone that is mechanically inclined can do the upgrades. Best person to find is some one who has done it before. If you question their ability you may be better off paying the dealer.

I saw a post that the rear cylinder (left) exhaust covers the primary and service isn’t possible unless you remove the pipe. I checked mine and it does look close but the bolts that hold primary on are not blocked and primary looks like it should come off OK. I am not sure what mile of service requires taking off primary cover just yet.

Sounds like you may have read this thread but here it is anyway just in case

I have put 1200 more miles since install of upgrades and everything is working great.

Good luck with yours.
