Best Pipes for Softail Standard
Just ordered a 2004 Softail Standard, fuel injected. Might have just enough cash for new pipes. I want the best for performance and I want em loud. The dealer gave me a ballpark price for the chip, download and installation but never said I should wait till breakin. Whats the word on brands and the breakin question?
PS.This is my first Harley. Delivery date is 3/20/2004

I had an 02 Standard (carb) that I ran the V&H pro pipe on. I love the pipe. It has a deeper sound than most. I like it so much I may put one on my RK (injected). Of course this is just my opinion. Go hang out at the dealer/event and listen to the different exhaust and see what you like.

I would think that most in the know would tell you that a 2:1 system adds the most potential for performance gains. There are a few threads that discuss the pros/cons in performance and sound of different 2:1 setups ranging from V&H, D&D, WB, etc. For my money, I'm going to add the V&H Pro-Pipe HS to my FXDL.

I just placed the order for the V&H Big Shots Staggered yesterday. I've got about half of my first 1000 to go before I put them and the Ness big sucker on my 03 fxsti. I can't wait to hear, feel, and see the difference.

Thanks for the reply
Thanks guys and thanks Comando, the advise about hangin out and hearing the pipes before I buy makes good sense. Seems the Vance and Hines pipes are very popular. Saw the V&H Short Shots on a Springer in Florida, liked the look, but did not hear it run. They are very affordable too. But I like the longer duels. Decisions decisions. New bike supposed to be at the dealer Saturday I'll stop in today and check. This is not my first bike but first "real bike". Great thing is I have already met some real nice folks and made some new friends. 57 years young and got that kid at Christmas feeling, it's all worth it. Thanks.

Do the short shots have a crossover in them?

No crossover in the ShortShots. They have a deep mid level sound with the baffles in. With the baffles out, they sound the same, only louder.

V & H Pro Pipe
My opinion and experience with performance exhaust is that there is one choice for performance and looks. Vance and hines Pro Pipe HS. This pipe out performs almost all. Thunderheader might beat it a little on performance but then you have to take in to concideration the looks. I honestly think that the thunderheader is not a very attractive pipe, but it does sound unique, and it works for some bikes on looks. My opinion is the Pro Pipe HS.

When you add this on, can you post some pics? I'd like to see how it looks on a Lowrider, I'm currently trying to figure out which ones I want to get! Thanks!
