Why?

Sorry if this has been asked before, but here's a question for all you exhaust gurus.

Why does H-D put two into two pipes on most of their bikes? From what I've read here and elsewhere, Two-into-one or true duals seems to be much preferred. What gives?

I'm certainly no "guru"... but I'd be willing to bet it has a lot to do with meeting EPA requirements.

Mr. Z
I hope that you understand that the 2/2 that HD uses are really 2/1 as they hae the crossover in all their pipes. It is sometimes hiden in the mounting bracket, but 2/1 it is.

The crossover pipe also makes the exhaust quieter, besides torque. With the crossover when the cylinder fires the exhaust goes down it's respective pipe and also down the crossover pipe which lets some of the exhaust go through the other muffler.
