Rock Chalk wants to know Dino or Syn?
Way too technical for a dummy like me...

just landed my 09 SG and have no idea how to make a decision on what kind of exhaust to put on it. what are the advantages of slips on or not? seems people i've talked to have mentioned v&h montser ovals or rinehart true duals

i'm most interested in sound and looks and not looking for any kind of super performance, but i love the way that screamin' eagle heavy breather looks.

can somebody please break it down in some simple terms for a dumb ass like me????

thanks guys.

You will have to do a little search here...

Hey buddy, I also have a 09 st. glide. Still coustom and also trying to figure out what do add to it.
People here are very helpfull. But there are many posts here about pipes. Do a little research and when you find some that wrote something about the pipes that you are interested. Just write them a quick PM (private message) and I am sure they will answer you and send you photos if available.
I got a lot of help and info this way.
Good luck!!
David

If your not all that interested in sound and extra performance, why change from stock? 09 touring bikes are not so bad stock. Having said that i was after a little of both, performance and soun. Put on the V&H basic slip ons on my 09 RK.
Not outrageously expensive, look good and got both. A little extra power and a nice sound too boot. I hear that the the new SE slip ons are not as good as they used to be. Not sure why, but i believe they are now produced by a different factory.

Just did an upgrade for a friend on an 09 UC. We did the Rinehart, BuB #7's, SE intake, and it runs and sounds good. We also used a Mastertune for it and loaded the new map. Bike runs great, no popping on decel and sounds good w/o being obnoxious..

i am interested in sound maybe i worded it wrong. more interested in sound that performance, although some performance boost is definitely nice.

i read about you guys with the stage 1 download....this is where it's too technical for me...what does that mean? and re-map, etc.......?????

thanks for all of the replies.

Be ready for pipes to be an evolving process. There are those that have bought 3 or 10 different pipes to get the sound/look they wanted.

It's just me, but I hate the look of those big a$$ drain pipes V&H calls monster ovals, and I like V&H. Not sure how they dyno out. Make sure that's a look you want before you buy. The picking look is easier than the sound.

Chris

yeah, i haven't convinced myself on the look of the monster ovals either, but they're growing on me..if anyone has some good pics on an SG i'd like to see them. I definitely didn't like the way they look on V&H website, but on youtube there are some vids that make them look pretty good.

there's also a guy with rinehart and big city thunder baffles that sounds really, really good. anyone know anything about that set up?

A 2 into 1 style pipe is the best for performance gains.I would recommend the D&D Fatcat(for 09 models it's called the Boss)!!!Depending on what kind of motor work you will be doing, decides what baffle to use!!!!

Basically, Re-Mapping adjusts settings for your fuel management system. (SE race tuner, Power commander, Thundermax, etc, etc,)
Usually required to help performance and tuning if you are changing pipes and higher intake air cleaners. Takes a few goes to get it right though.

i talked to the dealer yesterday and he is recommending the heavy breather ($240), v&h monster ovals ($608)and ECM download 1 (??)($120) this w/ 1 1/2 hours labor ($117)for $1133 with tax. does this sound right? does one need the download?

Rock Chalk,
You may want to look at the exhaust others have installed on their bikes before you spend the money on something you're not satisfied with. Then either you may be stuck with something you're not happy with or you go out and purchase something else to try.

I stuck with the stock set-up for my 08 Ultra for all of last years riding season. Every time I went to an event, I was looking over all the different systems on bikes seeing what I liked and didn't like. I'd heard so much talk about how true duals would rob your low end torque. But I like the look and sound of a true dual so what should I do?

Well, I ended up going with the Vance & Hines dresser true duals with the V&H basic slip-on plus the SE high performance air cleaner as well as re-mapping with the SE Super Tuner.

I saw and heard the bike a couple of days ago at the dealer where it is stored for winter and really like the set-up. For the first time since I've owned this bike it actually sounded like a Harley. This is a personal opinion, someone else may not like the exact same set-up. Because I paid the bill and it is my bike, if I like it, that's all that really matters.

I thought about the V&H monster ovals but the cost kept me back. Same thing with the Rinehart true duals. More expensive and though they may perform a little better than the V&H true duals due to the fact that the Rinehart's are 'stepped' I didn't want to pay more for a small gain.

I did post my dyno sheet in the "Drag Racing/Dyno Posting Forum " portion of V-Twin forum titled " 2008 Ultra Classic mainly stock dyno results ". I'm happy with the results and can hardly wait unless winter is nothing more than a bad memory to try it on the road.

The true duals did not steal away my low end torque like I was afraid but this is because my bike's engine is stock. If I decided at some point to change the cam or increase the displacement I will probably have to swap the exhaust system out with something else. I don't see that happening for at least a few years, if then.

Once you are fairly sure of what you want to go with I say; DO IT! When I bought my bike new I pre-warned my wife that I would be changing out the exhaust just as soon as I knew what I wanted. I also knew that if I paid for something I wasn't pleased with the with would not be pleased with me.

Now we should both be pleased. I have the sound, looks and increased performance I desire. And she no longer has that cross over pipe by her right angle that used to get her complaining.

Have fun with your decision Rock Chalk.
