SuperTrapp Megaphone question

I have a 2001 Road King Classic with true duels and Supertrap Megaphone exhaust with 12 disks in each side. Though the bike sounds okay Its just not loud enough. I want it to be a bit more "Throaty". I'm told this can be accomplished by adding more disks. Does anyone have experience with this exhaust that may be able to give me a starting point. I'm not willing to change up the exhaust just yet without trying a cheaper alternative. Thanks...

There are open end caps that will turn it up.

What is you engine build? Using only 12 disc would be pretty restrictive(backpressure). I have the open end cap with 10 disc. The open end cap is equal to 10 disc. If you don't want to spend any money just add 6-8 more disc and see how that sounds/runs.

RK is correct, add some more discs to increase the flow and the sound slightly.
The slip-ons do use a smaller core than the 2:1 so you are not comparing apples to apples. With the slip-ons you can probably go up to about 18 discs before you are maxing the flow of discs vs. flow of the core.

18 discs, take the fiberglass out of the baffle before it rots the chrome pipes out. Ask me how I know that

By you taking the time to answer my question I don't think it would be proper for me not to ask you how you know that. The pipes look real sharp and if I can prevent them from rotting out and maybe give it a better sound at the same time I'm all ears.

RK05 I wish I knew more about the engine. I just picked this bike up for a steal. It's got so much chrome I can only work on it with sunglasses and lots of sunscreen. The previous owner really set it up nice. The down side is I bought it off a dealer who couldnt provide me with any good details about any engine work done to it. I'm gonna start by taking your advice and adding 6 or 8 disks and maybe open end caps to see what that does. Definately cheap enough to try out. I thank you for your input.

Exhaust gasses can be very destructive, especially when you combine a litte moisture and let a bike sit a little, or over the winter.
We have seen mufflers that look almost perfect on the outside, and are completely rotted on the inside. That's why your car mufflers always rust thru in the same spot.

You do not want to remove packing material for several reasons:

1) The packing is a barrier for heat, without packing the body will discolor.
2) The packing is a damping material, without packing the pulse wave has no where to dampen thus the wave bounces around in the open can causing a distortion and reducing positive flow (you lose power)
3) Without packing the core is free to rattle around in the can from the pulse wave.

Yes harmful acids are formed in the muffler body but if you ride for more than 10~15 minutes that mix will be gone.

Would that be an E-Series advantage over the S-Trapp?

Not much. The current ST beat the ("E" with the optional core) across the board. But, IF you can get an "E" cheap it is a great pipe.

BOTH pipes were designed in 1999~2000 so not much has changed with either design.
The ST is actually better because of the bigger collector especially on big inch applications. I thought of the future and people that would be doing BB kits.

The Super Trapp mufflers rotted out from the glass holding water. Took a while but this is a bike thats been cross country a number of times. Not every ride is long enough to dry them out. Your experience may vary, just trying to help. Someone will always have a different opinion, this is what happened to me. Everyone knows what opnions are like. They arent that much louder with it out and louder is what he wants
