Crane coil fitament

I just registered, new to Harleys. I have always riden Beemers and never thought I would consider a Harley,.............then I drove one. Anyway, I now have a Hertiage and I have lots to learn.

The previous owner did several things to my bike but wasn't able to give me specifics. I understand the heads have been shaved and an aftermarket cam added. He handed me the coil cover and said he didn't get a chance to install it. I have discovered it has a Crane single fire 381-344 coil on it. Which is the 8-3001 crane part number. The problem is that I can't seem to fit any nice cover over it as its long. I would like to use the antique "winged" cover with the two holes on front to keep the vintage look of my bike but it doesnt fit. Can anyone recommend a coil that would fit my stock mount and winged cover? My mount is behind the rear jug (st welded mount). I don't want a coild thats going to put out less performance. What are some of the specs I need to look at when comparing coils, ohms, single, double fire, etc.? Someone recommended the 380-616 which is the crane 8-3005 but I've also heard this isnt quite the same. Thoughts?

You can look and see what type of ignition you have in the nose cone. If it is aftermarket, (I'm guessing it is) maybe it has a switch that will do single or dual fire. If so, you could go back to the HD coil and the vintage cover. Nothing wrong with the HD coil, it works.

Hi Man

I have a 8-3005 and an 8-3001 and several stock style coils so I took a measurement for you..

First off, the 8-3005 is the same in all spec's as the 8-3001,, 3 Ohm Single-Fire.. The only diff is the Outer dimensions..

The Outer dimensions of the stock style (vintage.???) coil that you may think will fit-up with this fancy Vintage cover is almost Identical to the 8-3005 coil and is shaped roughly the same,,, quite diff than the the 8-3001 coil..

Soo, since you are running the 3 Ohm Single-Fire 8-3001 you are obviously running a Single-Fire Ign, doesn't matter which kind or brand since the Ign and coil are evidently matched up,, so in that case, the 8-3005 will simply replace the 8-3001 if you choose to try it..
