Enlighten me on Evos
I have been looking at a bike online, a 1997 Fat Boy. It has a bone stock Evo.
I have never ridden an evo before. I had a 2002 Super Glide, and now a 2005 Electra Glide. Anyway what I wondering is what to expect out of the 80 inch motor.
All my buddies ride twin cams and like to run 80-85 mph on the highway. Am I going to have any troubles keeping up? Personally I like the looks of the Evo and obviously they did very well for a long time in the Harleys but from a more practical standpoint with the new bikes being 96" I am going to be left in the dust everywhere we go?

I look forward to hearing the general consensus....but I will tell you that my 96 FLSTC has no problem doing 80-85 on the highway. It's got an S&S and an Andrews Cam, so not exactly bone stock....but she goes right along....
A few mods and I think you'll be pleased....but I cannot compare to a TC from personal experience...

The only thing about soft tail evos is the motor is mounted solid in the frame so you will feel harmonices. But to run 80+, put a ev27 cam in with a air kit and mufflers and there big motors will impressed. YOU really like running 80 to 85mph?? My 86 fxr will do 80+, I just don't do it anymore, don't do in the car except when i have to go threw the atanta by-pass at rush hour. Them people are stupid. There is nothing that you can't do with that evo that the tc crowd does.

Agreed
I rode an Evo for a long time and you'll do just fine on the highway. You'll notice the thump since it isn't counterbalanced, but it never bothered me. Goldwings are made for people that want smooth.
You won't have the torque of your TC88 friends with a stock motor, but you can change that over time. Evos have millions of highway miles and are solid performers.

Running my '84 EVO softail (fxst) on the interstate at 80mph drops the mpg to around 35 and the rpms are up there. Don't know exactly how high she's reving with no tach but, with drag pipes, I can sure hear it.

my pretty much stock 1996 evo low rider does just fine @ 85-90 mph no problem, it is rubbermounted, but it goes just fine, I prefer that motor over my twin cam for sure, but that's another argument

my beautifully KustomFlames painted Road King is hotter looking than my stock painted evo for sure! but even with the motor work cam carb blah blah blah, the evo can blow away the rk.
Lets see what my (soon to have) 09 Ultra can't do...... beside take up room in the garage!!!!

My EVO's, '97 RK & '94 FB will & do:
(1) get great gas mileage
(2) run 180*-220* cool
(3) will run with the 88 TCs
(4) can both run 85-90 mph all day long...& then some..
& won't:
(1) need rear heat shields protection from motor heat
(2) need new cam tensioner shoes & chains
(3) need the heads ported to run cooler
(4) have on the '09's a 'rear cylinder shut off' mode to help with HEAT Issues.

Here's my 80" w/3.37 gearing that's in a 1996 Ultra Classic that sees alot of touring miles. Compared to a TC 95" in a similar bike, he better be on his toes to keep up.

So happy i bought evo, after riding friends tc's and 08 models, and already owning a rigid mount evo sporty i settled on a 94 fatty.
Its just got that feel and keeps up with the tc's no worries (cam carb and pipes done).
My next bike i'm going backwards again, a nice ol shov!!

I agree... I'm used to the feel of the motor harmonics.. Just feels right.. My 94 Fatty is my main ride also...
I'm going backwards too, my oldest bike is my Harley Flathead.
