points cover rivets

I would like to swap out my points cover (I guess they are still called that even thought there are no points) on my 98 wideglide but it is held on by what looks like rivets. Is there a way to convert this over to screw type or how do you guys put aftermarket covers on ? I'm used to shovelheads so this is new to me.

Drill the rivets out, then tap threads into the holes in the circular cover plate underneath. Harley sells a kit to do this--I don't have the part number, but it includes a drill bit and a self-tapping screw for the threads. I don't remember now if it also came with two screws to use with the new timing cover or if those are seperate. Any dealer should know what you're talking about. If you ever intend to re-use your present timing cover, be careful drilling the heads off the rivets--it's easy to chew up the existing timing cover with a drill bit large enough too remove the rivet heads.

Get the kit--it's quite self-explanatory once you see it.

You can drill the rivets and remove the cover. Then take the plate off by taking out the screws. I used a Sportster cover on my 96 evo. It has the screws on a horizontal plane( not F-16) and mounts to the same location as the plate did
