No you didn't give your 2 cents.... you GURANTEED a smoker if you don't change the rings and thats horse pucky....now I didn't post that to hurt your feelings, I posted it because its true so after your smarty pants reply you just gave you can keep your two cents or take it for the payment of your bar room advice. I don't doubt you had a smoking engine experience after removing and installing a cylinder but if you knew what to look for in a set of rings for wear maybe you wouldn't of had that experience, so instead of bashing someone you should ask how do you know when its time to change the rings....there are signs that are very clear if you know what to look for.

If it aint broke..............don't fix it

If the end gap of the rings are within specs and the integrety of the combustion chamber and it's componants are good re-assemble the behotch. (Base gasket failure item, new item installed)

The person performing maintenance, preventive maintenance, troublshooting and overhaull on any engine must have, at the very least, an understanding of Suck, Squeeze, BanG, Blow. (intake, Compression,Power and exhaust, in other words know how it works, or is supposed to work. Also that person should have a concept of how to Identify worn or failed parts that are broken or worn beyond MFG Specs. (consult the book)

...................THE BASICS.................................................. ................................................

1.) initial inspection (whats Broke) (find whats broke by testing what may be broke)(identify the failed part (s)

2.) dissassembly (take the broken part off the engine or take parts off to get to the broken part. Double check to make sure that your hypothesis is correct.

3.) Inspection- Clean & inspect the parts you took off or exposed to make sure they are with in wear limits and are not related to the malfunction identified in step no. 1

4.) Replace worn parts (if any) and the freaking broken part (failed item from step no. 1)

6.) Reassemble the Friggin V-Monster. Test. If it has the same failure mode as it did before you fixed it, You "fixed" the wrong part of the engine (see step 1). If it fails in a different way, Look where you touched it.

.................................................. .................................................. .....................................
If the engine is not broken and your thinking of a performance upgrade........be carfull. The engineers at HD have passed the torch for over 100 years. Get some solid research in before going to a bigger bore and cutting the jugs walls to paper thin. They say start with exhaust upgrades, then head work and work your way to the compression ratio.
