EVO Derby Cover O-ring

OK whats the trick. I spent 40 minutes before I finally gave up.
I lubed my bike and was putting a new inspection cover gasket
as well as a new O-ring for the derby cover per the service manual.
The O-ring seems too big it absolutley will not stay in place. Is there
a trick to it? I finally just put the original O-ring back. Maybe I was given
the wrong one by the dealer? Is the EVO and Twin Cam different sizes???

Use alot of appoxy. Helps it stay in place and creates an additional seal.

Those things are worse than tryin to stuff a wet noodle up a wildcat's ass.....I finally spent the bucks and got one of the new style. Worked like a charm! Fiber type gasket with molded in o ring. Try it and you'l love it!

I would have tried a new gasket.. But the parts counter guy said that it isnt
for my 1998 EVO engine. Just twin-cams... So I am stuck with the wet noodles

I have stuffed the wet noddle up the wildcat's ass. I put chassis grease on the o-ring and stick it in the groove and put the cover on by holding the bottom in place and then flatting it out. I tried that gasket. Leaked like a shive.

You can use petroleum jelly (vaseline) to hold the o'ring in place also. Should work for ya and won't hurt anything. When in doubt..grease it!!

Put it in the freezer for 15-20 minutes. Be careful about putting grease or too much of anything on the O-ring to hold it in place. This is the major cause of causing the derby cover to warp as you're tightening it if you've got a lot on there.

The plain O-ring was used on Evo's. The newer style, more like a quad seal, with small nubs on it was made for both Evo's and TC's. The one for Evo's was marked with a white dot on it. One for TC's did NOT have a white dot on it.

I used the new one with nubs on it and it leaked like a kitchen strainer. Went back to the old one on my 98 EVO and find that if I clean the area with rubbing alcohol and then use a lube that I got for my swimming pool O-rings to stop them from leaking, all is good. Magic Lube comes in a small tube and is a teflon based lubricant made by Aladdin. Waterproof,non-melting, chemical & heat resistant. Just sticky enough to get the thing to stay in the groove and it works great!! See your swimming pool supplier.
