evo petcock question

ive got a 98 road king flhr that is carbed. every blue moon if the bike spits back, the vacuum hose will jumo off from the petcock to the fitting that it hooks to. i think it goes to the voes switch or whatever that deal is.

if i put a non vacuum operated petcock on it and bypass that switch will this cause any problems? anything to consider here? i'm afraid that if i clamp that connection that keeps failing, it might blow off somewhere else.

Do not bypass the voes switch, it will mess up the ignition timing. Maybe the hoses have lost there elasticity and should be replaced. Most auto parts stores carry vacuum line. Cheaper than a new petcock, don't buy a cheap one as they can cause other problems.

gsxrboy96 is an unknown quantity at this point
In my opinion, you couldnt get that vaccum operated pet cock off fast enough, they usually fail when your the furthest from home. as for the voes, dont by pass it, take all that hose assembly off and go match it up at the auto parts store, its the size of washer fluild hose...dont ask me how i know.. and run the hose straight from the back of the carb to the voes if you decide to replace the pet cock. just my two cents.

I pretty much agree with what's been said. Ditch the petcock and keep the VOES.

Your bike will run without the VOES. But, not very good.

A good after-market petcock (Pingle) is going to cost you a few bucks. But, they're worth it. Cheap ones are also worth about what you pay for too...

You can keep your stock petcock and get a kit that will allow you to eliminate the vacuum function. It just replaces the vacuum diaphragm in the petcock with a solid plate that has a little "button" on it that holds the valve open.

now that sounds interesting. do you know who makes these? do i simply put a vacuum cap at the location where the vacuum hose from the petcock hooks to? thanks for the info.

Here's what I did. Disassemble the stock petcock and move the spring to the other side of the rubber diaphram. Then disconnect and plug the vacuum line going to the petcock and leave a short length of plugged tubing connected to the petcock (in case the diaphram develops a leak). As others have said, leave the VOES connected. This has been working fine for 2 years now and I don't have to worry about the vacuum petcock failing now.
