Yet another oil leak thread

I have a 1996 EVO leaking oil from the bottom of the primary where the belt comes out. It sprays back on the sub frame when i ride, also when it sits after a ride. If I don't ride it for a while the leak stops. This is a new leak I have had the bike for 4 years and never had more than seepage. I have been keeping a close eye on all fluid levels and the only one going down is the engine oil. I know I'm burning some engine oil due to the age of the motor. Any help?

I guess it's possible that your oil tank is cracked. It is really hard to see the drop from what looks like alot of oil at the leak, but maybe not so much inside the component (trans, primary, etc) I would clean off all of the leakage, and then check where it's coming from. Tranny and primary leaks are VERY common from this area, thats whats most likely.

sounds to me its coming from the plug in the motor where the voltage reg. plugs in that's where mine does..i thought it was the primary also but the only thing going down was engine....and it is coming from the rubber grommet in the front and working its way back.......will look at it this winter.....

It could be an inner primary seal leak, or an output shaft leak, due to the front sprocket nut coming loose and backing off.....

If it's "slinging" off the front sprocket, that's more then likely the loose nut issue, as the fluid travels up the shaft splines, and comes out onto the front "dish" of the sprocket and slings off of it and around the back and swingarm.

Either way, the inner primary has to come off.

The stator plug seals in primary oil, not motor oil.

I think I have the same issue with the stator plug. when it sits no oil . when I ride oil all under the bottom. I cleaned it real good so there was no oil residue then rode it. It looks like the plug to me. What is the best fix for this

Primary

How hard is it to take the primary off? Do you need special tools?

Doing the same thing... chasing a drip/ seep leak? Your bike will need to be cleaned top to bottom. Then start from the top with a nice LED flashlight and after you ride it a bit look for the new oil seep. Taking the Primary off is not that hard it takes me about 45 minutes. I have done it about 10 times. Special tools---none really other then a torque wrench, breaker bar and a way to jam the chain up. ( see many, many threads on that alternative to special tools or primary chain)
I just replaced my stator and it can be serviced with just taking the out Primary off. Although you can either cheat it and loosen the inner to access that O ring between your motor and inner. I just cleaned real good and (real good) and then placed a fine impacted bead of RTV into the area mentioned without loosening the inner. Seems to be good.
Also your stator plug can be removed but new screws are needed if you pull stator out of plug to coat with RTV Not that hard just a few extra turns of a driver.

Or you can really clean out the plug from the block side and I use starting fluid as eyther smells great and cleans and dries fast. Clean blow out and pack some RTV around the boot and give it time to dry and make sure you get it down in there (time consuming as detail always is) This way you do not have to remove Primary outer.

Go get a manual if you are going to venture past the cosmetic's of a bike. A real shop manual. You will use it and love it for reference.

I have the manual and have removed the primary cover as well. I will clean the area around the plug and proceed with said repair.
Thanks
