Evo timing

hi
i'm new here and must confess i joined to try and have a specific question answered.
i have searched the web and various harley sites with no joy.

i have recently done a top end job on my 1995 flh. included is new 10thou over pistons, 3010 cam, manley valves and springs, 40thou of the heads etc.

the engine has been timed previously using the "double dot'" twenty degree mark on the crank. this mark is the also used in the factory manual for the 1995 FLH's. i have read on the "Nightrider" sight that they recommend "do not use" the double dot mark and time to the single dot, 35 degree mark at 1500 rpm.

i would like to know why?

i dont have a good understanding of "black box" ignitions but i do understand the role of the voes switch in relation to the dual curve ignition. i cannot get my head around the additional 15 degrees of advance being set at the crank unless when the timing is being set the purpose is to set "maximum" available advance.

my other bikes are norton singles and i find magnetos and manual advance/retard levers very attractive.

thanks in advance

Ross

Hi

i actually asked this same question of Stephen Mullen of the "Nightrider" site and he has replied "just my preference based on the way i timed my bikes, any method that yields a 32-33 max. advance on an evo engine is fine".

I suppose my next question for "techs" is when setting the "initial' timing on an evo, are you in fact when choosing what mark you time to, also choosing the maximum available advance.

regards
Ross
