Interesting find ! kinda long

I have a 95RK 38000mi SE heads 10.5 pistons Andrews cam-etc
After a 70 ride mile a couple Sundays ago (hottest day we have had) I parked my bike in front my garage, went out about 2 hours later to put it insde, upon firing up it missed on one cyl. for a few seconds then cleared up but then had a ticking noise. I figured was dirt in a lifter etc-changed oil- run about 60 miles-noise still there-checked pushrod adj all fine. Have had a had rear cyl. base seeping for while so I figured time to tear it down & investigate.
When I removed the carb I noticed a thick shellac like coating on the inside throat of carb & intake--turns out it had gotten into the heads & temporaly stuck ft intake valve----explained the miss & noise !
Could not figure for the life of me what I caused it ???
Last nite I figured I would flush out the gas tank---when I looked in it with a light it appears the internal coating has been attacked by some chemical & has turned to a hard jelly like substance !!??
Its a aftermarket tank & not sure what coating it was.
Well it explanies where the problem come from, but what the hell would have caused it ?? Something in the gas-ethanol-etc ???
Any ideas would be appreciated !!??
Luckily I have my stock tank & fenders so when I get the engine back together I can finish out this riding season !

Stumped in Va.

There was a thread a few weeks ago about someone's tank peeling from a gas spill because it wasn't prepped right.

I think someone mentioned about the coating that goes on first to protect the paint and to be sure this doesn't get on the inside! They even talked about what to do if it did get inside.

I wish I could find the thread; it was probably in the Paint and Sheetmetal section.

I just looked at that thread titled "Don't let this happen to you" and that is not the one I was thinking about.

Don't know where I saw it but it talked about cleaning this coating off a new tank interior before use. Good luck!

In doing some checking on Google ("Gas stabilizers and ethanol"), there are reports of gumming occurring when some stabilizing additives are used in an ethanol blended gasoline...

Just another notion!

Thanks for the responses !
No, the bike is ridden at least weekly March-Oct

The tank was a used one that I bought to change my paint scheme
I cleaned it before painting (inside) and it looked good at that time-had been running it for 18 months before this happened, so it leads me to believe that there was some sort of chemical reaction ??!!
Needless to say that tank is headed for the dumpster, just glad its not something I had payed big bucks for custom paint
