Broken Speedo cable twice, ideas???

Hey to all, put a new speedo cable on a '92 FLHTC...first cable (probably original) broke right at the base, square piece that goes into unit at wheel.

Had another cable shipped overnight (Soo, Mich). Replaced cable (R&R) drove less than 40 miles and cable broke again...same place, right at the end of the cable before square piece into unit on wheel....Any ideas on why this is happening would be helpful. CSM-H

PS: put square piece from speedo into unit on wheel and it still spins....

Are you lubing the cable. If you are still having problems I would change the inner and outter cable. Are you getting a flick in the speedo? You might have too sharop of a bend in it some where, causing the cable to bind.

I had the same issue and the first year I had mine. Put in a new gear at on the tire/axle along with the cable and that was the last time I touched it 45k ago.

This has been a recurring problem with me. Actually the only one, so I'm not biatching. I have had the best results with replacing both the cable and the gear sender with genuine H.D. units at the same time. Then make sure that the cable is routed smoothly, no sharp bends, etc.

It takes me like 5 minutes to swap out the sender, and maybe a half hour to do the cable itself. I don't even have to pull the faring, just the headlight bucket. I know right where it goes by feel. In '87, they moved the sender to the other side of the wheel and I think that helped a lot.

92 EVO Speedo cable

Hey thanks to all....The bike is actually my best freinds (High School and Army buddy) we replaced the cable after it broke and re-installed the new one. ALL of you are correct it seems (I left Michigan yesterday), my bud called up a different Harley dealer/tech and he told him the same thing you all said. As always this "site" is a money and mind saver...thanks!!!! CSM-H

I will pass this confirmation information to my bud....
