Wet Sump

Ive been haveing a bit of oil blowing out my cranckcase breather lately, someone said you have a wet sump but, i didnt get to ask them what that meant. Is it something to do with shut off ball valve inside the oil line, not slideing back into position to shut of the oil, after the pressure release within the oil line to the cranckcase?
Ive had to replace three breathers,in the last eighteen months because of oil biuld-up.

G'day TNT696,
Wet sumping is when your oil is not returning to the oil tank for some reason, either a blocked or pinched return hose, a damaged oil pump or a faulty check valve allowing your sump to fill up with oil while the bike is stopped. If it was wet sumping you would be getting a LOT of oil out your breather, not just a little bit more than normal. There are a few things that can cause this problem, but I would start by checking how well the oil is returning to the tank, you should have a steady solid flow, if it is erratic or spits a bit, there could be oil pump issues, 1 or more broken teeth on the plastic breather gear causing it to be out of time or not turn at all, or something as simple as a piece of debris blocking your return lines somewhere. How long since you replaced the oil filter, and did you use the right grade filter? What bike do you ride? Does it breathe through the heads or through the crankcase as in the earlier Evo's and shovels? If you put a twincam oil filter on an Evo (yes it will physically fit on) it can cause issues, because the twin cam oil filter is much finer and filters out smaller particles, but the TC oil pump operates on much higher pressures, and the Evo oil pump can not push sufficient oil through the finer screen, causing oil return issues. Of course all this is only speculation at the moment because we dont even know what bike you ride, and a few more symptoms would be helpful, like whether it comes out when you start it, or whether it does it while riding, or after turning the engine off, etc, and how much oil you are actually losing, is it enough to have to top up often? or are we only talking a slight dribble from time to time?

Oh and by the way, whereabouts are you? I am in Sydney.

1986 FXSTC and the oil overflow has been minimal and usually while rideing, until the other day, while kicking it over, a lot of oil poured out the crankase breather.Yeah havent done an oil and filter change for a while but, will check oil return to see if there is a solid flow or spitting.Gold Coast
