Clutch-I'm stumped

Just finishing up a final drive belt replacement and things have been going fine until the replacement of the drive gear...clutch, in particular. I've read all the threads here regarding clutch adjustment and am following them. But, after I've done the adjusment that the threads describe (high and low), I've got way too much clutch cable. Can't figure out why that is. I have no idea where all the slack has come from. I'd love to finish this job this weekend, but I'm stumped. Thank you. 98 FLSTS

I think there is a rod that can go in backwards between the clutch and the lever on the right side and cause issues. Been a long time and I am drunk, but that is what I remember. Isn't there a ballbearing and spring in that linkage also? gotta find my manual.
