49er is on a distinguished road
pulling threads in case

Hey, my buddy has an early evo, 85 I think, He put 10 to 1 pistons in there and it pulled the threads in the case.whats a good fix for this? one engine builder said it was a lost cause. what do you think? Thanks

Helicoils. They get repaired all the time. It's a common issue......

I should add that mine was done in a professional machine shop, with the cases split and on a fancy drill press to keep the drill bit and tap aligned and perpendicular.

I put 22,000 miles on with them (2 helicoils).
The guy who has the bike now is still riding with them in there. he has had the bike for 2 years.
I didn't use a fancy drill press. just a air drill and two guys watching me to help keep the drill straight. I wouldn't replace the others, just the ones that are striped out. JMO

tend to agree with the shop and replace the case's, a mate here just spent 5 aussie large on a set of S&S cases fitted for his 93 evo which were fairly common with this problem,proberly comes down to how you ride , hard or easy, if you warm it up or not but at least he now knows it wont happen again
