Intake Manifold Leak

Fighting with an intake leak on the manifold on my 86 FLHTC with a CV carb and manifold. Sprayed WD40 around the intake seals and the rpms increased indicating a leak.

Pulled the manifold and seals look good, no rips or tears. Is there a certain way the manifold mounts? The part numbers are up or flip it over with the part number on the bottom. I'm thinking of using copper RTV sealant on the intake seals?

That's the later style manifold, without the "compliance fittings" that came on your bike. The compliance fitting type were not good. I don't know which way your numbers go, but you might try removing the flanges so you can get a good look at it and holding it up there and seeing which way it fits best. Next, replace all the rubber and you should be OK.

I upgraded mine off of the compliance fitting type when I changed to an S&S. It bolts up the same as what you have.

Thanks for the info. I went to your web page and noted the "Welcome to Arkansas" sign. Is the sign below it real??

I got that jpg from a friend in New Zealand. He mailed it to me when I told him we were moving to Arkansas. I think it's pretty funny. We used to have "Home of ..." signs up at all the borders, but after Uncle Bill left office, they took them down. I think it was costing too much to keep replacing them because they would be shot to pieces practically overnight.

Numbers go to the bottom. Seals sometimes get hard or have a small tear we often don't notice. Make sure when you put them back on that the correct flanges are in the correct place. They're labeled F and R on the flange. Also, make sure you put the flange on the manifold then the seal into the flange. If you do it the other way, you'll spend 3 hours and never get it to fit and tighten correctly. No need to ask me how I know since I spent 4 hours changing the seals yesterday. I bought the kit from J&p and it had all three pieces. Fixed my intake leak. Now if I could just find the sanity I lost by not looking at my parts manual to see how it fit together.

I changed my manifold to a Ramjet with solidly mounted flanges and gaskets as opposed to rubber o-rings. I also coated the gaskets and head area with Gasgacinch contact gasket sealer. That was many years ago and never a leak since. Prior to that I used to go through intake seals regularly.
