S&s Hvhp Oil Pump

S&S makes several models of their HIGH VOLUME HIGH PRESSURE (HVHP) oil pump for evos '92-'99. Part numbers 31-6208 & 31-6209 are the universal & standard body with all parts except oil pump drive shaft gear, oil pump pinion shaft gear, and an S&S steel breather gear and shim kit. Part numbers 31-6302 & 31-6298 have the universal & standard body plus oil pump drive shaft gear, oil pump pinion shaft gear, and an S&S steel breather gear and shim kit. The cost difference between these two styles is over $100 & if the additional parts are not neccessary for bolt-up to a stock engine, I'd rather not shell out the extra cash. Does anyone have any experience with this? Thanks.

I had one of these pumps put on my bike during a motor rebuild - can't complain about the pump it kept pressure up and seemed to work pretty good.

As for the S&S steel breather gear - don't do it. If/ when something should come apart in your motor, pieces always seem to find their way to the breather gear. If you have a metal gear all it is going to do is help add to the destruction. A plastic gear will take the brunt of the beating and not help take down more parts with it. I've had my motor go down twice now due to "rare occurances" and the plastic breather gear caught alot of the beating; keeping the metal pieces out of the cam chest.

Just my 2 cents....

Thanx tx_shooter for the info. Do you know which oil pump was installed? The basic HVHP or the one with the additional parts? Can I install the basic HVHP using stock evo oil pump drive shaft gear & oil pump pinion shaft gear, or do I need S&S's oil pump drive shaft gear, oil pump pinion shaft gear that comes with the more inclusive HVHP oil pump?

reuse your stock gears if they are in good shape,(s&s are oem replacement) but just replace the snap ring and key when you replace the pump (may come with one)but i would recommend replacing the stock plastic breather with the s&s steel breather and steel spacer, but be sure to check endplay if you do. why are you replacing the pump? did somthing fail?

Thanx, avgjoe, for the info. Tappets are starting to sound sloppy & am going to replace with S&S. While I'm at it, going to replace stock cam with ev27, freshen up the heads. While I've got your interest, any tips on oil pump install? Looks pretty tight in there.

pretty simple to change, have a can of break clean on hand to keep things clean. disassemble pump before install and clean and oil. when tightening pump, be sure to spin over engine to set pump and check your free spin, use correct torque spec for mounting bolts, want to say 10-14 ft lbs if i'm correct. ev27 is a nice cam with a little compression, i like the ev3 with some lite port work and compression myself. what happened to your old pump for you to have to change it?

thanx, avgjoe. don't have to, want to. i like the idea of more volume & better scavenging. anyway, is this do-able with the engine in the frame? if so, any cautions i need to pay attention to? thanx

I put an S&S oil pump on my 93 police special when I did the cam and top end a couple of months ago. I bought the pump and breather seperate the pump was 305.00 and the breather was 95.00. If you are installing the pump with the motor in the bike you will have to use your stock pump shaft. I installed the S&S gears using a new snap ring and key, (supplied.) It was a litle tricky and you have to rotate the motor to make sure it isn't binding, (as recommended by other forum members.) I am very happy with the set up. Good luck.

Just put a HVHP in my 1995 evo. Used the factory drive gears. Don't think you can use factory shaft since the HVHP uses longer gears and needs a longer shaft. I went with a steel breather. I have seen some plastic breathers get hot and warp. Be carefull tightening the two top bolts. They have a differnt torque spec. My bolts didn't extend in very far and stripped out one hole when torquing. Had to heli-coil it and find longer bolts. I should have put in longer bolts first time around since I thought they looked short and the holes where deep enough...

good reply rcsoftail. experience is always the best teacher. the "be wary of" items are useful info. i was wondering about the steel breather & the stock plastic. the bolt lengths are also something i will now be aware of during the installation. thanx
