Lifter/pushrod question
I just re did the top end of my electra glide, and rode it today, and it sounds like a lifter is tapping, I added the ev27 but retained my stock push rods, is it possible that the added height of the cometic gaskets is causing too much clearance? i reused the old pushrods because they had around 17k miles on them, I really didnt want to use a adjustable pushrod, but looks like i might, anyone else with this sort of problem. ?

Any chance you got your push rods in the wrong place?

My thoughts exactly. Have done several of these (EV23 and EV27) upgrades and never hard a problem. That's bout the only way you're going to have a problem.
Now there could be a lifter problem...one of 'em not pumping up. AND I hope you didn't put the stock lifters back in on a new cam.
 if you did..!!!!

I did re use the lifters, I figured. 16k wasnt alot, and we did inspect the lifters for wear, so guessing i shoulda went with new lifters...lol, I know the push rods are in the correct place, Guess i will tear back into it and replace the lifters and use adjustable pushrods. How big of hassle is it to adjust those?

Wear patterns are different and you'd have to have a microscope to see the differences. One thing about it if you go with adjustable push rods ya don't have to tear the top end off...just grab a pair of bolt cutters and lop off the old push rods.. BUT I'd recommend you getting a set of SE push rod covers/tubes for the adjustable one. These tubes are built different allowing more room to do the adjusting. Just a suggestion..you can do it with the stock tubes but you'll have better luck with the SE.

Ok, ill order those up tomorrow, Im not really wanting to go back to a harley lifter if you have to replace them every 20-30 miles, What do you guys think about lifters such as fueling, crane or even ultima, or should i just stick with the stock harley lifters ?

S&S lifters w/travel limiters are a nice cost effective upgrade, generally much cheaper than JIMS machine, which are also nice. Check lifter bore condition. Lifters are sold in oversizes to account for lifter block wear. Blocks can be honed for next oversize and new os lifters installed. Loose fitting lifters can be a source of problems in getting lifters to pump up. I would always go with new lifters in the 25 to 30K miles plus range on top end work and I think it makes good economic sense when installing a new cam as insurance against lifter failure(very expensive). A quick search on ebay came back with a set of S&S lifters for $150.

There is NOTHING wrong with Harley SE lifters...nothing..!!! Me, I use them all the time. AND it's not that you have to change 'em every 20-30 miles. You can run those puppies 60-80,000 miles with no problem. It's when you change out the cam...it's highly recommended to change the lifters for the NEW cam.

so you suggest SE lifters? Which part number for a '96 evolution engine? I just made a disaster trying to change my cam. Using a Jims bearing mounting tool i screwed against a lòifter instead putting the bearing into his hole. I destroued the lifter and i'm also worring about the lifter block.
My bike is a stock evolution engine with EV27 cam and super E carb..do you suggest to change all lifters with standard or SE?

Talk to your Harley parts guy about the SE lifters for the Evo. They may not be available any more.. Stock ones will work just fine but put in new ones... I thought I still had the paper work on my '96 FXDL but don't. Was going to check the lifter number that I put in on my EV23.
Explain to me in more detail how you screwed up the lifter. The way I'm reading it is you didn't pull the lifter out before trying to install the bearing.. ???? AND you'd better be checking the lifter block for sure. They can get distorted real easy...
