mods to evo motor
i'm new to this board, and i'm open to all/any sugestions. i have a 97 electra glide, with only 35,000 miles(not my primary bike) wy wifes been hit with m.s. and can no longer ride behind me. the only thing i can think off is to add a side car. no problems there. we are/were never back road riders, always perfered highways with ferquent trips to florida and all points north. the trouble is that "everyone" who i consider with evo knowledge, says the stock 80" is too small. i've asked about stroking it,they've said evo cases are very sensitive. all i want is to still be able to run my bike at highway speed(whatever that my be) be dependable. i've considered ultima motors, swapping a twin cam motor etc. i can not afford a new bike as my wifes m.s. meds are making my wallet scream. i appreciate any ideas. thank you

I would consider having a good valve job and port&polish to the heads. Raise the compression to around 9.7:1 give or take a tenth of a point, drop in either an ev27 or wood 6 cam. This should give you about 85-90 reliable hp and torque. I am currently working on this build right now. I'm using the ev27 cam. If you do the disassembly and assembly yourself you should be into it for around a grand.

mark - The 80 EVO is a good solid performer - if you want that little extra to run a sidecar; I think your best bet would be a stage 1 upgrade.
Carb kit - K7N or Ness air filter - jets as needed - and a EZ-Just idle screw - you can run stock mufflers or put on a couple of Aftermarket slip ons. But it will run stronger and give you better mileage.
If you go to Stage 2 - you are getting into opening up the engine and putting a roll of hard earned cash to work. But you said "on the cheap" and Stage 1 will not break your wallet. There are several aftermarket kits you can get but I would reccomend CV performance kit for the simple reason it's drop in and forget - the NESS big sucker will get you all the air you need and also does away with the oil return to the heads. Those darned things are always leaking.
Nice thing about doing a Stage 1 is you can do it yourself in a couple of hours.
I would advise you to also get a HD shop manual if you haven't already - the 50 bucks you spend on it will one of the best investments for your ride you ever bought.
As far as slip on mufflers go, they are nice to have if youv'e got some extra cash but you don't really need them.
Best of luck and I hope your wife will do alright; that MS is a real PITA; but the persons attitude that has it can overcome will a lot of prayers and support from family and friends.
If you need more info on some of the places to check for your parts, give me a PM.

As already mentioned, a Wood 6 or Andrews 27, with some head mods, and tuned, will REALLY have you running very well. A-typical 80 hp/90 ft/lbs is well within reach.
Those 97 Evo cases are fine for either a stroker (89 CI), S&S Sidewinder kit (96 CI), or the all-bore Axtell 97" kit.
The last 2 options hover at 95-100 hp and 105-100 ft/lbs, over a VERY broad band, using either one of those same cams, OE cylinder heads, re-worked.
Great bagger power.

My 80" evo is just shy of 80 hp...Night rider is go a build lised for 95 hp..so its possible to make good power .A good pipe (2into1)good ignitiom(dyna 2000) cam (EV 27 or23), roller rockers, carb mod(yost tube),,This is easy bolt on performance,,,headwork with this stuff will really bring a motor to life...zYou could spray NOS as well,,,

90/90 plus easy enough with a Wood 8/heads/tuned.
