EVO - 1999 Weak Points
Okay, I'm a twin-cam guy, but have found a 1999 Heritage Springer that brings tears to my eyes. Low-low miles (under 5,000), perfect condition & bone-stock. I was looking for a 2002, but now am very close to buying the 1999. I'll likely do the breather kit, slip-ons, thunderslide and a mild bolt-in cam (EV23 or EV27). And I know I should replace the INA bearing with a Torrington. My goal is to get the motor runinng like it should, and most impiortantly, that it be dead-solid reliable. All-out performance is not the goal. So, my question is: What is the quick list of must-do's to shore up any longevity/reliability issues on the 1999 EVO motor? Thanks in advance.

EVOs have very few weak points. The cam bearing is really about it. If you take care of it, it'll just run and run. I would warn you about an issue with Heritage springers, though. I crashed one on a test ride, when I had to brake agressively, because the springer does not get progressively stiffer as it compresses. On regular springers, I am always leery of the front tire washing out, because it's a 21", but the 16" on the Hert. is way more confidence inspiring. When I clamped on the binders, the fork compressed smoothly all the way to coil bind, and once it bound, the tire washed out completely. I learned my lesson, and now treat all springer front brakes with kid gloves.

I would go with the ev27 w/adust. pushrods(and INA bearing), swap in a mikuni hsr42 carb, upgrade the ignition(screaming eagle is cheap if you can find a new one), and find an exhaust that will compliment the other mods well.
Then when you hit 25000-30000 put in some pistons and have some porting done while you are getting the valves done. New lifters also.

sounds like my experience....
started stock 1998 Lowrider
step 1: andrews 27, mikuni 42, S&S intake, ignition, lifters, adjust push rods, Torrington, Screeming Eagle slip ons (old style cycle shack made), Big sucker. Result: Very nice, definite improvement over stock,
Step 2: SE pistons, mild head work (5 angle) target 9.75:1 comp.
result: WOW!
very driveable--good power range, MPG increase, smooth,...and if you want, more than enough to embarass twin cams and get you all the tickets you could desire!
I did a 175 mile loop from Boise to Lowman, Garden Valley, Emmett, and Eagle today--2 lane mountain riding, 40-65 mph...she's a beautiful ride! I'm very happy.
Spend a few extra dollars, set her up right in the beginning--and you'll have a solid 80 incher that will keep running with the pack with/ahead of some bigger dollar and bigger inch mills.

CVO and INA
All this discussion begs the question. Did HD replace the INA bearing with the Torrington on the souped up FXR2, 3 or 4's?

OK The only weak point was the bearing,,not sure they had the ina bearing in 99..These are far better motor than the shovel and twin cam..Evos will get 100k on them with NO issues..The heritage softail is a good lookin bike,,they will eat neck bearings as it is a negative rake on the springer.(de-raked). Thats the only issue I have heard of,,,my friend rides a 98 stocker,,,no problems accept the starter stayed ingaged one time...Motor runs like a top..

Yes, the bike that made post AMF Harley's famous. The vibration has a feel all it's own - very unique, very cool. I may own others, but I'll keep my 99' Heritage forever!!
