metal in the motor

Well ****, ****, ****!!! Decided yesterday to go ahead with the ev-27 cam, ajustable push rods, and a power camander ignition system with a 2 in to 1 thunder header. I normally ride a 2004 big dog chopper but I purchased a 1996 Ultra classic with 37,000 miles on it for me and my wife to ride longer trips on. We found slight scaring on the end of the crank when we pulled the old cam. So my mechanic says hay lets check out the oil pump gears since were right here. we found part of a old internal cam bearing race from who knows how long ago. now my mechanic says for $600 bucks we need to pull the engine and oil reserve and split the engine case to make damb sure no needle bearings are in there and no other metal is in the back side of the engine or oil tank. Should I do the tear down or will the needle bearings settle to the bottom if there even in there?

If you found debris in the motor, without a doubt i would pull apart to inspect. You wanna be stuck on the side of the road with the old lady on the back? I wouldn't....

Make sure a reputable shop takes care of it, debris had to be cleaner from every nook and cranny...

I feel for you. I was also the victim of a bad cam bearing. Unless you feel lucky, I would tear it down like txchop said. The only problem is, once you tear it down you may want to some other things like new rings, etc. Probably more than you were expecting to spend.

The "slight scaring" statement would be of concern to me, as that is/could be an indicator of crank run-out.
Not often found on those, but nonetheless, should be checked.

I had the same thing happen several years ago. Rather than split the cases, i bought an S&S breather which have the fine mesh screen instead if the wide slots like the factory plastic ones have. I put around 1,000 miles on it, pulled the nose cone and removed the single needle fron the breather.
